There's a decent amount of Diamond-legal stuff that's been reprinted for Celestial. Personalities are, for the most part, not part of that group.

Was bored, and compiled a list from the CE core set that are Diamond legal.

Holding Akodo's Grave
Strategy Ambush
Holding Barley Farm
Event Celestial Alignment
Strategy Chasing Osano-Wo
Holding Copper Mine
Holding Corrupt Officials
Strategy Countermove
Strategy Courage
Strategy Courtesy
Strategy Defensive Screen
Strategy Duty
Strategy Encircled Terrain
Strategy Enough Talk!
Spell Essence of Gaki-do
Strategy Extended Maneuvers
Region Farmlands
Strategy From Every Side
Strategy Fury of the Dark Lord
Holding Geisha House
Holding Gold Mine
Follower Gunso
Follower Heavy Infantry
Event I Am Ready
Event Imperial Ambassadorship
Holding Imperial Artificer
Event Inferno
Holding Iron Mine
Strategy Knife in the Darkness
Holding Kobune Port
Personality Kobushi
Stronghold Kyuden Hida
Holding Marketplace
Follower Monkey Magistrates
Item Oni-Daikyu
Strategy Outer Walls
Strategy Palm Strike
Strategy Peasant Vengeance
Strategy Retribution
Holding Rich Coffers
Ring Ring of Air
Ring Ring of Earth
Ring Ring of Fire
Ring Ring of the Void
Ring Ring of Water
Holding Secluded Outpost
Holding Shrine to Hotei
Holding Silver Mine
Strategy Sneak Attack
Strategy Spearhead
Follower Spearmen
Holding Stables
Follower Steadfast Bushi
Strategy Steel on Steel
Event The New Order

Item Writ of Restriction
Personality Yogo Rieko
Personality Yoritomo Okitsugu

Note that some cards have been MRP'd to read differently than the original versions. (Fury of the Dark Lord, f'erex, doesn't destroy Shadowlands cards anymore. The Rings are *completely* different wording than the Diamond ones, if memory serves.)

Re: How do I get into L5R?

Let's say that you had a whole boatload of Diamond-era cards. If you built a deck out of them, would you still be able to play against somebody with a Celestial deck, or would it be like taking Arabian Nights up against Ravnica?

Re: How do I get into L5R?

It'd technically be compatible, but it was designed for a different environment and ruleset. Double Chi was still around in Diamond. I honestly forget if the Once Per Turn rule was around then.

Re: How do I get into L5R?

No, the one-per-turn rule was not around in Diamond.

It'd be fine for casual games, but Diamond cards are priced different in game play, use a different assumed (and not-printed-on-the-cards) rules set, and have other things that might catch you up.

On the other hand, it's a great way to get cheap cards to have fun with!

Think that I'm going to go with the Celestial Edition starter, then. Probably Scorpion, and then maybe Crab. Thanks for the information, everybody!

That should work out great!

Just a suggestion: everyone should at least try building a deck at the other end of the Honor spectrum (Phoenix, Lion, or Crane for you) to see how different the game is from the other side.
