Re: Witch Hunter: The Invisible World Preview Online
Does this have a metaplot, or a lot of additional books necessary for play?
What's the system like?
How basic is the combat, and what's the magic like?
Are there "good" witches in this game, so as not to p*ss off my nature-worshiping players? Have you braced yourself for the inevitable complaints about the portrayal of the Aztecs?

Thanks for asking about our new Swashbuckling/Horror RPG line.
Necessary? No, Witch Hunter: The Invisible World is a complete game. No other books are necessary to play it, although we can think of a bunch of interesting products that will expand and enhance your experience.
As to a Meta-plot, no the Core book does not hinge on a meta-plot, though lots and lots of story hooks are sprinkled throughout the text.
We do have an associated World-Wide Campaign ala' Living Arcanis that will be debuting along with the product at Origins called Witch Hunter: Dark Providence. The campaign will be presented in a series of one shot adventures along with mini-story arcs lastinig anywhere from 2 to 5 adventures a pop.
And best of all - 99% of all Dark Providence adventures will be FREE with the occasional printed product that, of course, will not be FREE. ;-)

Designed by Robert J. Schwalb of Green Ronin/Warhammer Fantasy fame, the system uses d10 and dice pools with a number of successes necessary to accomplish the task. I believe you can get an inkling of what the game is like from the preview.
We wanted a streamlined, intuitive game that would not get in the way of telling a good horrific story. I think the system that Witch Hunter uses does just that.

That's a pretty involved question, but in essence combat is fast and furious. This is not a combat simulator. WH has a cinematic style of play that keeps things flowing. Magic is broken down into Talents, which for right now consists of Animism, Hermetic and Prayer. All spells (called rites) fall into 3 categories: Basic, Greater and Heroic/Villainous.

Witches? Nope..Witches are not like the modern day New Age/Wiccan who calls themselevs a witch. These are the Witches from myth and legend, consorters of demons and devils, devourer of children, etc.
Should your nature worshipping player want to play a "good witch" they can play a "Practitioner of the Old Ways" and take Animism as their magic d'jour.

LOL..nope. But the very first Aztec that comes up to me at the Big Bar on 2 at Origins, I'll buy him/her a drink.
Com'on, as anyone who has seriously studied or read about the Aztec culture, they weren't a bunch of choir boys. Were they blood sucking Vampire-types? Nope. But we're here to tell a good horror story, not teach a class in cultural anthropology.
Pick up a book on Solomon Kane by Robert E. Howard. Were there a winged Vampire empire in the heart of Africa? Nope, but man was it a thrilling good story.

Okay, so my Pantheist can take Animism, and these are Robert E. Howard's Aztecs, and we're playing Solomon Kane, the RPG (sort of).
Okay, all of that I can live with. Looks interesting. And the die pool thing makes me glad that it's not d20 or something.

No, not exactly. To my knowledge, Howard never wrote about the Aztecs. I was using it as an example of taking a wild myth and carving a rousing good story from it.
Someone else is doing a Solomon Kane RPG. This is Witch Hunter and while Solomon Kane was an inspiration, so was Sleepy Hollow (the movie) as well as the Brotherhood of the Wolf.
Yes, you can play a grim Puritan type, but WH goes way beyond one type of story or character type. Much, much more...

Re: Witch Hunter: The Invisible World Preview Online
I liked what little I saw in the preview file. Any chance there will be a demo/quickstart out before the game's release at Origins?

No, we just won't have the time as Origins less than 3 weeks away.
However, if you are attending Origins, we have four, count 'em, four Introductory adventures that have Pre-generated characters for ease of play. These Intro mods, along with the new ones launched at Gen Con will then be made available on the web later that month or September.
A small Quick Start rule set is being developed, but considering all the other things we have releasing at Origins/Gen Con (Codex Arcanis Limited edition hard back, Psionics Unbound, Year One: The Year of Ill Harvest mini-campaign, Witch HUnter Core book, Witch Hunter GM Screen and Adventure Kit, and Spycraft: Combat Missions), not to mention organizing the largest slate of RPG events that Origins has ever had, we're up to our necks in work.
But they will come, I just can't give a definitive answer as to when.
Re: Witch Hunter: The Invisible World Preview Online
Thanks for the info. I won't be at any of the cons, so I guess I'll just have to wait.

This looks cool. Is it out yet? I don't see it on my FLGS' website.
