Re: [Comics] Shipping this Wednesday, July 2, 2008 + New Comics Thread
I passed on buying Nightwing this month, the issue just didn't look terribly interesting.
IMAGE COMICS
MAR082093 DYNAMO 5 #14 $3.50 - I enjoy this book quite a bit, but I seem to be in the minority, as I'm the only person visiting my local store that buys it. I do wish it wasn't more expensive than other books, as I doubt that helps its cause. It should be interesting when we find out who Vigil happens to be.
APR082226 FRESHMEN SUMMER VACATION SPECIAL $4.99- Another expensive book. If you liked the previous issues, you'll like this one. I thought this "special" issue was OK, since I find the chracters amusing, but I have to admit, it had little to entice new readers.
NOV072055 SAVAGE DRAGON #136 $2.99- Larsen's duties as publisher have really cut into the schedule of this book, making it difficult to follow.
There is an intriguing back-up story involving Chelsea Nirvana though

Squadron Supreme: ... well, THAT was different. It's got some of the same characters, but the feel is very different. Not a bad thing, per se, but it will be interesting to see where it goes. The introduction of pseudo-marvel characters is kind of weird, though I guess it allows for fights between them and the pseudo-dc characters.
Front Line: kind of interesting on it's own merits. The Iron Man disney bot in Avengers Tower was funny. I did like how they presented every day life, and how normal New Yorkers see superheroes.

Batman #678
Okay, here's what I think is going on.
Back when Bruce was initially put in the isolation chamber, and had the mental commands implanted, he came up with the "Batman of Zur-En-Arrh" as a subconscious defence system for exactly this scenario. Remember that sequence in Batman Dies At Dawn where he was talking about contemplating this exact scenario - so even though this should ruin him, there's a new Batman who can deal with the problem, and possibly allow his brain to resurface.
After all, presuming Honor's a hallucination then Batman could well have planted the old tape recorder and the costume materials, without realising they had been there, as a fail-safe - and given the Honor said something NICE about the Batman back in #676, Bruce's subconscious has chosen him as the representative.
Now, if Dr. Hurt is Thomas Wayne this could be an interesting continuum. For example...
Bruce Wayne witnesses Thomas abuse Martha, has a horrible childhood and creates an elaborate fantasy escapist world, called Zur-En-Arrh where a mysterious Batman saved the day, and restored order to a brightly coloured child’s universe. Friendly Batmite accompanies him.
When Thomas kills Martha, Bruce is so traumatised by it, he represses the memory, and canonizes his parents, along with public opinion. That scene of extreme focus isn’t a sublime act of will – it’s an intense mental breakdown. Remember the Joker’s internal monologue in the Crime at Midnight (#663) about Bruce and the Joker having the same complex – why be a scared little boy when you can be a superhero?
Bruce then spends the next years, obviously through a filter of normalcy, becoming this Batman of his dream. Dr. Hurt, the fake identity of the living Thomas Wayne, discovers who Batman is, after all, he’s a brilliant surgeon – possibly Dr. Hurt is tapped to run the experiment, possibly Dr. Hurt finds out about the Bruce Wayne/Batman connection and fakes the whole thing.
Then, using Bruce’s shared childhood fantasy of Zur-En-Arrh, he implants a series of commands, using the black glove. But Batman’s subconscious, as above, fights with the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh.
I don't necessarily think he is Thomas Wayne, however - but if not, who else has the connection to Bruce since childhood? It's not Alfred...
I'm more confident about the subconscious defence thing. Man, Batman's crazy.
The real question is, if he did the Space Medicine experiments why has he been waiting so long?

Astonishing X-Men #25: Wow, Ellis´ turn is looking to be very interesting! The dialogue is great, there´s a hailstorm of new and cool concepts...
Triploid artificial "mutants", the Indonesian spaceship graveyard (heh heh)
and so on. I´ll definitely be following this.
Batman #678: I´ll... have to re-read this. I´ll have to re-read Morrison´s entire arc, I think - when I read it split up like this, I have time to forget about what happened five issues ago. And that does not cut it here. Victor Von Villain´s theories were interesting enough - we´ll see if I agree after the re-read (I will probably pretend to agree, though, because he´s smarter than me).
Also, I don´t want Payne to be the real Thomas Wayne. It´s a great feint to drive Bruce insane, but i don´t like it as a possible reality.
Buffy Season Eight #16: The arc before this (Japanese vampires ahoy!) was simply serviceable, making me forget how good this title has been before. This issue is boss. Fray Yay!

That was been something bothering me from Day 1, even if the book isn't actually bad or anything.
I would hope it's to show how kick-ass Cosmic Boy was (& his inevitable return), making the team effective & shoving it to the UP heads, but with the level of angstyness, inefficiency, & almost-malevolence i'm having trouble seeing that actually being the case.
