Well, in the middle of my move from my old place to the new house, I got a copy of
Scrollworks in the mail box. My very first mail item was a game zine, instead of a stupid bill or some other nonsense. That's the free issue Christian promised to those who would replied before midnight on New Year's Eve. I never doubted Christian would send the thing, but it still amazed me when I got it in my hands.
That's when I truly appreciated the gesture. What's even better is I was all exhausted, and there was
no way I was going to find a gaming book, something to read and relax. Between the sessions of painting, fumes of epoxy, oil and water paint, I had that little zine to kill some time and take my mind elsewhere.
I will also say this: I think Christian is one of the best thing to happen to this industry recently. I think I am not exaggerating when I say his enthusiasm is contagious. He always responds positively. He's very much aware that people are struggling in this industry, and seems willing to give a chance to folks. His zine is not an output for his creativity. It's
much more than that. I hope some of the talents he's showcasing will blossom into pros. Whether they do or don't, they can always say they had a chance at a paying gig.
On the issue: I was surprised. The production quality was higher than I expected, although this isn't Dragon magazine

I enjoyed particularly the "crunchy bits", the rules thinkering. There was not enough of that for my tastes, but these are, after all, just my tastes. The article on knowledge skills alone was very well done. With more of that stuff per issue, I would probably be a subscriber. I felt there was a bit of everything (D20) for everyone. Some of the "flavor" stuff (for instance, indepth look at an NPC) would of course be portable to any game system. But this remains at heart a D20 zine.
So there. I thought I would thank Christian publicly. That's the least I can do. If you're a D20 fan, go at least take a look. It may catter to your tastes:

And to you, Christian, thank you. I apologize for the lateness, but moving to this new place has been hell, and once settled, I forgot. I was reminded of it today, when I found the zine again. It will be the thinnest product on my gaming shelves, but it will remain there, proudly.
You have my email adress. Use it when you feel like it.
Thanks again, and take care!
