[RPG]: Victorian Age Vampire, reviewed by Menchi (4/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/9/9213.phtml

Conan McKegg's Summary:

True Gothic vision of the Victorian Age. While it does draw on the World of Darkness for background, this is a valuable product for anyone who wants to explore a gothic victorian world.

Clan artwork

"I also feel that Guy Davis... deserves especial praise for the Clan pictures. He manages to capture the nature of each clan perfectly - the best being the Malkavian, who is dressed as a victorian mental patient complete with head cage, and is crushing a bird in his hands."

With all due to respect, the clan artwork was terrible. Not only did it fail to do anything exciting with the well-worn and sleepy clan sterotypes, but it didn't look Victorian at all. In fact, most of it looked goofy.

The Malkavian example that you liked so well is probably the worst of the bunch. Once again, we see the clan portrayed like powerless idiots that can't be taken seriously. Psychology was largely a newly-discovered country in the Victorian Era, filled with the anxiety of the unknown.

And we get a guy with a cage over his head. Think about this for a moment. How's he going to bite you? And crushing a bird -- yep, he's definitely kooky.

No, I take that back -- the Tremere was the worst. This guy looks about as threatening as Santa Claus on the Fourth of July.

Now I don't mean to slam an artist in a public forum. Mr. Davis' work was techincally well done, and I'm pleased with most of his other work for White Wolf. But I felt these drawings not only failed to look like vampires, but didn't evoke anything of the period.

The "Other Reviews" system didn't catch it because I included a : in the title.

For the sake of the averages, it doesn't move them at all.

Ahh - well this is the problem with art, it's all in the eye of the beholder.

I still liked the art - but I can see how others may not. I maintain that the art is evocative and appropriate, but that is just my personal opinion.
