We played a sample Midnight adventure at a convention. Whew! Was that tough!
I'm not sure if I'm really fond of the spell system. I like it, but it takes some getting used to. VERY LOW POWERED.
Also, difficult to actually obtain weapons. It's not a given that a warrior will have decent armor or weapons.
You may only get to cast 2-3 spells for a low level character. There are some good roleplaying ideas here, but it's a very grim setting. It makes Ravenloft look absolutely cheery!
So if you want a seriously low powered, very dangerous, gritty and full of gloom and doom game, this is it. The awesome roleplaying potential is incredible.
If you feel that rolling up a new character every now and again is too much or the obvious 'everything is against us' idea is too much...stay away.

I just got done flipping though this book, and I ahve to say, I immediately wanted to play in this world. However, it's definitely the kind of game world where the DM *needs* to have pretty much a complete buy-in from his players. It seems like the kind of world where if everyone's on the same page, it'll be great, but if some people aren't up for the style necessary for it, it may not go that well.

hehe actually I DID use the spellchecker...but was surprised when I just re-read the review at the # of errors present...

That is why proofreading the sample page before posting is important. I have caught a number of errors that way.

I already own too many D$D world settings. Also I don't have too much confidence in FFG for various reasons (one being that they seem to jump too many times from one idea to the next and therby not maintain support for their previous products over the long run.)
I'm not sure if I or my friends would enjoy a low magic world setting. They were hesitant to play Rokugan. One reason besides the obvious was that obtaining magic items were difficult in this world but I won them over when I told them about Rokugan's unique way of handling magic and the various combat styles of the various clans (that of spontaneous magic...those of you who own L5R will understand).
Anyway, I think a low magic world would be boring to play in unless it had something else that made up for the near lack of magic. From the review, I did not get anything that made up for this low level of magic so I think I will pass...

I think "low magical world" is a misrepresentation, I think it should be " magic items are important and very powerful so there are no magic item shops nor crappy plus one swords laying around and so they are trying to make magic special again world". There are heroic paths in the game which give your character extra abilities each level and so counterbalance the lack of lesser magic items. Personally I have played the game for about a month and so far do not miss the minor magical items that you find at the lower levels. Also, every class can learn to cast spells, not without cost of course but they can nonetheless. That in of itself makes up for the other half of the coin thats seems to be missing.

Midnight is a great example of a campaign that does something right, providing a variant on dark fantasy not seen elsewhere. It is a shame it will be limited to bein described as, "just another D&D campaign"....this is where we really need to recognize the difference between D20 as a system and D&D as a setting in and of itself. Midnight will probably suffer for the fact that it takes fantasy gaming in a better, non D&D flavored direction, but I hope everyone who craves that finds this great setting! (IMO)

I am very much looking forward to running this setting. Any game which causes players to think carefully about how they use the magics they possess, is a winner to me.
