[RPG]: Eldritch Ass Kicking Revised, reviewed by Carl Congdon (4/5)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/9/9255.phtml

Carl Congdon's Summary:

Fun send-up of powerful wizards with furious action thrown in. Beer and pretzels, parody of fantasy wizards, or any combination thereof. For $6, it's not a bad investment at all.

GM?

Does it really require a GM? I thought it was just a battle system for wizards.

Yes, yes it does.

Remember, I said in the review that there's all the after-hour drinking, counter-plots, research, etc. Plus saving the world from wizards who are worse than you. So there is roleplaying to be done, and that requires a GM.

Plus, someone needs to fill out the world of Arnhelm a little bit. There are some suggestions for landmarks, etc., but the majority of Arnhellm is left in the hands of a GM to do with as his story needs.

Great Review

Thanks for the review. You pointed out some excellent things! Hubris IS coming but as a free download in a couple of weeks. I wanted to include it in Revised (along with epic actions), but they needed more playtesting. Look for those downloads on RPGNow or eldritchasskicking.com soon.

One of my goals with designing EAK was to make it flexible with both humorous and "epic" adventures. I like both kinds of games -- I like playing wizards who are tossing puns and warning their opponents NOT to catch their robes on fire.. and then I love playing a wizard who has hatched a great scheme to wreak havoc in the world. They are both fun. I tried to include enough flexibility so that both could be included in a campaign. I hope I succeeded in some small part in that manner.

My next project for EAK is Adventures in Ass Kicking which should go into more detail about creating and building the world of Anhelm, building towers, some information on henchmen and other things, and finally a number of campaign guides for GMs to give them ideas for games. I hope it fleshes out the game even more.

Eventually, a printed version will be released combining the main rulebook, adventures in ass kicking, and other extra material. Don't expect that real soon though. I'm only a one man show.

Thanks,
Nathan Hill

Howdy,

EAK can work as just a battle system for wizard versus wizard fun, but I think it is much more fun played as a full rpg with plots, archvillains, character goals, and long-winded speeches proclaiming your greatness. I hope EAK is flexible enough to be used in either manner. I've ran it as a brief battle game or as a full fledged convention round with like 8 players. Talk about chaos.

It was FUN chaos though.

Thanks,
Nathan Hill

Ah, but will you include rules for awarding experience points for Best Megalomaniacal Wizard Quote, Most Descriptive Vulgar Display of Power, etc. in that new supplement?

As you pointed out in your Golden Rule section, it's good to award players for getting into the spirit of the game. What is the best way to do that without making them obscenely powerful, but still encouraging them to get into character so that we have those awful puns, overblown speeches, and huge chunks of special-effects-budget thrown around with gleeful abandon?

That's the only thing I wish there was more of in the game.

By the way, the website for the game is www.eldritchasskicking.com and has direct links to purchase the game and download freebies (including a Windows & Mac character generator).

Rock and roll.

Hey,

I love it. I can't believe I hadn't thought of that. In EAK sessions I have run, I use the general GM guideline for that -- give them a bonus for getting into the spirit of the game. I might change that so it is variable -- a basic reward is +2, but a larger reward is +4 or up or what not. I hadn't thought about experience points either. That would be very nice. Perhaps at the end of each session, the best quote or most hilarious effect is voted on and rewarded experience points. Perhaps the rule would be -- you cannot nominate your own power or phrase, you must nominate another wizard's action.

Hmmmm.. intriguing.

Thanks for the feedback. You rock, man.

Thanks,
Nathan Hill
