[RPG]: Action! System Core Rules v.1.0, reviewed by Kester Pelagius (3/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/9/9300.phtml

C. Demetrius Morgan's Summary:

As a OGL alternative the Action! System rule set may not be for everyone, but if you want something between GURPS and Lords of Creation in style and flavor, then the only thing you have to loose is the time it takes to DL the file.

yet *another* system going OGL??

What do you mean "yet *another* system going OGL"?

Right now there is the D20 System, things based upon the D20 system, and the Action! System. That's it.

So the second system to go OGL doesn't really make sense as a "yet another" system.

I have to go with Dan on this one. I'm not aware of any other systems that are OGL except for these two.

To be honest, with the kind of popularity it has, I can't imagine why White Wolf hasn't taken their system OGL.

Greetings,

In point of fact there a lot of games, especially on the web, that publish under some variant of the/an OGL.

Here I'm referring to OGLs- Open Game Licences- in much the same way as Xerox has come to mean anything that is a copy of an original. (No pun intended.) Too, there are quite a few OGL compliant or related licenses that either adapt the basic premise or use it as a guide. The Open Gaming Foundation site alone lists 5 such variants!

For instance:

Dominion games has a "DRL" license. Very OGL.

EABA (Put out by the folks that do/did CORPS?) was also a OGL type system, I do believe. As are a number of "universal" or "generic" systems.

Too, "Fudge" allows for a similar sort of publication process whereby what you produce has to have a disclaimer appended to it. But you are "free" to do so. Not sure what, if anything, they call their license. It may be more of a limited grant to use a "TM License" sort of thing, sort of ala the "Simply Roleplaying!" Plainlabel Game System, or the earlier license under which the Action! System was "open" for use with.

Then there is the FDL, which is related to the GNU GPL. Similar but possibly not quite OGL. There's about half a dozen systems out there publishing on the Web under this, maybe more. Thus D20 is really but one branch of the OGL family tree.

All told just because things might not be advertised doesn't mean they aren't out there. (Wow, triple negative, or something.) They may not be easy to find in a Google search under "OGL" or "Open Game License" but if you've ever downloaded a game that is "freely available" on the web then odds are there might be a OGL type license buried in the file somehwere.

Kind Regards,

CM

Greetings,

You're too kind. There's at least three places in the review that, upon re-reading, my fingers itch to go in and edit. Either that or beat my word processor's auto-correct function with a stick, or something.

Ah, it's great to have scapegoats. . .

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Kind Regards,

CM

FYI, the best place to get information about the Action! System is at the official Action! System web site, at http://www.action-system.com .

Lots of Action! System goodness there, including Extensions and Variants (optional rules and plug-ins) to help customize you Action! System game.

Your use of OGL in that particular context only adds to the confusion most people already feel.

The OGL should be used to mean the specific license, not a generic term for other licenses that have been used or will be used in the future, no matter how similar they are.

So ActionSystem! is indeed, the first roleplaying system, other than d20, to go OGL.

Hardly. Mutants & Masterminds has been available since last year. Slayer of Dragon RPG has been available under the OGL for several months, as has DS:JN. Looking at http://www.darkshire.org/~jhkim/rpg/freerpgs/bykeyword/open-license.html, I do not see any more, but I feel certain I have heard of other games being released under OGL but not d20.

Action's ancestors

"Though if there are any two systems that one could point to as being spiritual predecessors of AS it would have to be GURPS and Lords of Creation."

The Fuzion system by R. Talsorian games deserves mentions here: both Action! and Fuzion use a 3d6+Att+Skill vs. TN mechanic. Atts and skills range from 1-10 in both. Action combines Fuzion's Dex+Ref, and drops Tech and Con -- but otherwise the Atts are the same. There's even a PDF file for conversion between the two.
