Everything Good From The Movie Is Gone...

Post originally by Devin Parker at 2003-05-15 00:07:20
Converted from Phorums BB System

I began reading this book a few years ago, and ended up quitting a little less than halfway through. I was looking forward to seeing the world depicted in the movie expanded upon, and revisiting favorite characters like Madmartigan.

Too bad they're all dead.

This may as well have been a completely unconnected book, as far as I could tell. Willow's personality is completely different; he even goes by a different name.

While I can't speak of the quality of the entire book and series on their own, fans of the movie should brace themselves for some bitter disappointments that will hit them right at the start...

I concur, this is pretty much exactly what happened to me. I come about 2/5 through the book before I put it down. It's not a bad fantasy book in itself, it just doesn't seem to be at all connected to the movie I liked very much.

This book is another example of Lucas cashing in on a well-known title to make money. I admit that I only picked it up because of the "Willow" connection. As a generic fantasy, it's not horrible. I've read books that are far worse, but also those that are far better.

If you want to revisit the characters, just watch the movie again.

I managed to strggle through this literary pile of cow flop and realized it was several evenings I would NEVER get back.

Anything that might have been good in the movie, I agree, is missing from the book. I have a great idea, lets take the interesting characters and kill them off screen. The reintroduce the weakest character from the film with a new identity... It does not even sound good on paper.

Claremont is a good comic book writer, and he shoudl stay in that format. Lucas has proven he can take any half way decent idea and then run it into the ground sooner or later.
