Sounds interesting, but... system info?

How does the system work? In fact, what is the system?

Actually, Dan, you were forwarded a copy of HardNova which uses the same rules as Ghost Stories, albeit with tweaks to the system to match the genre. But, for an overview of the mechanics, hit this link:

http://www.pigames.net/genrediversion.html

Here is info that I posted to the HardNova review, regarding the mechanics:

<< Is there a core mechanic and how does it work? >>

The rules are an amalgamation of the PIG House Rules and its Active Exploits system. Utilizing a 2d6 mechanic, the player attempts to roll as low as possible under a combined target number that includes the sum of the character's trait + skill. The addition of one or more bonus dice allows you to pick the lowest two. The presence of penalty dice means you have to roll extra dice and go with the highest pair. Increasing the range the dice roll must succeed by is used to simulate difficult actions.

<< How does combat work? >>

I'll quote from another recent review of HardNova on GameWyrd:

"The combat system is easy – those 2d6 – and yet has enough flexibility to give the players some options. If you want to attempt a quick draw then the difficulty for the combat role increases. Unarmed attacks do damaged based on the attacker’s strength but firearm damage does not.

Hope this helps a bit...

The system is a straight-forward roll 2d6 under your stat + skill affair. Margin of success is determined by the difference between the roll and the target, though difficulty plays into as well.

Since the average person has a stat of 2, that means that any unskilled task is nigh impossible. There is also some discrepency between what the text says (A Challenging task requires a margin of 3 or more to succeed) and the table on the character sheet (which shows a margin of 2-5 being a success). I have not gotten around to asking PIG about these issues.

For damage, each weapon as a flat damage rating (doubled in a Triumph (critical)) that subracts from the character's stamina. As the character's stamina is reduced and you check off the boxes on the character sheet, penalty dice are added to skill rolls creating a death-spiral effect. For example, with 2 penalty dice, you would roll 4 dice, but discard the lowest 2.

Huh. Sounds a lot like XPG. What are the major differences?

Thanks!

I do not have any of the XPG (or 1PG) games, so I cannot really comment.

I haven't forgotten, Mark. You're still in the rotation.

The review just didn't make it clear that Ghost Stories uses the same system.

Thanks for catching that error. Go with what's indicated on the character sheet.

For unskilled tasks, the advanced rules indicate that you don't need to roll for trivial and routine rolls. These are primarily the only ways to succeed at an untrained task. If it is challenging or impossible, they are not likely to succeed.
