Evan Waters's Summary:

The BUFFY game keeps going strong, with a book that surpasses expectations of what a \"monster manual\" can be.

Very comprehensive and objective -- exactly what I like in a review.

I'll agree. I've been impressed beyond measure with the quality of Eden's BUFFY line, and this review lets me know that they've released another fantastic product. You covered everything I'd want to know about it. Thanks!

Ditto. I don't play the game but it makes me want to.

The one thing I don't like about "Buffy"

...the whole shtick about holding content over for future volumes. I resent the carrot-dangling of content; if I'm happy with the way the books are coming along -- and for the most part, I am -- then I'll buy the successive volumes without the tempting.

As it is, though, I do resent it, and I still only own the base rulebook.

I understand your feelings, but I do think that Eden's been a lot better about this with Buffy than other game companies have been with their own properties. It seems to me that with Buffy, Eden went the Chaosium route: Put as much as possible in the core book, then expand upon specific areas in supplements. So, I'm not that concerned about them reserving certain subjects for their associated supplements.

Now, if they had given only vampire stats in the main book and had reserved other creatures for future supplements, for example -- that would have annoyed me.

The fact that you can play the game entirely with the core book is an indication of its strengths. The supplements are added extras-- you don't need them to play the game. They don't add anything vital or required. Just a lot of cool extras.

In my own Buffy game, we just used the core book, despite owning the Slayer's Handbook and Monster Smackdown. The latter two were useful to have for ideas and more quotes, and a few extra system thingies.

I have connections to Eden, so I'm hardly unbiased, but I'm not sure what the problem is. There is an enourmous amount of ground to cover, and when topics need more detail, they have been assigned to the most appropriate suppliment. Hence Vampire Willow in the monster book, and Magic Willow in the magic book. I'm sure it'd be nicer if everything came out at once, so there was no waiting, but I suspect even CJ and co aren't up to that :-)

Anyway, an interesting point,

David C

You don't need more than the rulebook to run the game. That is all we use (well ok, I use the Director's screen, but that is it), even though I own the Slayer's Handbook (which I bought simply to support Eden, not because I needed it for my game)

As for holding content: A few things spring to mind here:

A) Eden is a business, and well, for a business to stay that way, they need to have product out there. You can only sell so many copies of a core book, and no matter how complete they could try and make it, someone will find something that was left out.

B) Eden could only cover through Season 6, so anything left out from Season 7 is the fault of FOX, not Eden. Ergo, it wouldn't have been complete for the whole series anyway. I know for a fact FOX told Eden to hold off on doing much with the Watchers, since they wanted to wait and see if Ripper (the series featuring Giles, a co-production with the BBC) was going to take off or not. So certain things being left out was not of their doing.

C) You don't need any of the other books. Sure, the Slayer's Handbook and Monster Smackdown are considered "Core" books. However, they are full of optional material. You don't need the monster creation rules to spawn critters if you don't want. There is enough in the core rules to do so (inmho). As magic is so freeform, you don't need the Magic Box, which is full of spells from the show (which you probably don't really need, as others have made their own versions that can readily be found on the net) and options for customizing spellcasters a little more.

All the other books do is give you expanded options to run/play Buffy, nothing more. You don't ever have to buy anything past the core book.

That's my $0.02

I'm not sure what your complaint is.

No RPG line puts everything in the first suppliment, there isn't room.

So what would you rather, they tell you where stuff is going to be, or they don't? I mean, would you rather Monster Smackdown just didn't mention the Trio or Dark Willow at all?

Or is there something you would like taken out of it to fit them in?
