In WFRP Dwarves have a high toughness stat which effectively acts as armour. This leads to dwarves potentially being able to charge into battle naked and still taking less damage than their plate mail clad human companions, which rather damages suspension of disbelief.

Hence the naked dwarf syndrome.

This is what I posted under another review of the same game, and just wanted to make sure more people read it since this is the latest review. Oz

I've read all 4 reviews on this site, and most people seem to say that it's a great game, but the price is a bit much. If you've read the reviews and looked at the PEG page and like what you've seen as far as the game system, then go to rpgshop.com and pay less than $25 (including shipping) and be happy. They're running a special on it right now, so it's cheap (and no, I don't have a vested interest, just tight with money like most folks these days and want to help). I bought two, one each for me and the wife, for less than $47 (including shipping). I'd have rather helped out my FLGS, but they couldn't match the price, and we live on a budget. Hope this helps someone.

Thanks for the tip, Oz.

It's a shame though you have to make so many disclaimers around here just to help someone out.

Thanks again

But I *didn't* say that. I said it might *look* like it was a bit much but that I thought it was worth the money. In fact I put the comment in explicitly because of the storm on other threads and the tendency to judge the value of a book by how much heft it has.

I agree this is a very good deal.

You explained the Naked Dwarf very well. Many games with "threshold" damage systems as opposed to "ablative" damage a la hit points have the property that you can beat on a foe for a long time without doing *anything*, which many players find really frustrating.

Of course, "ablative" damage can be problematic too, since in order to make someone really tough you have to ramp up their hit points to a huge degree, which means they can ignore a knife to their throats and that you frequently have a lot of bookkeeping to do, which gets annoying.

In some cases you are damned if you do, damned if you don't. But in the case of SW I am willing to trade a bit more bookkeeping to have large monsters take a few hits to knock down. With normal men I find the one wound rule just fine.
