[RPG]: Dragonstar Player's Companion, reviewed by NPC Jeremy (2/3)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/9/9415.phtml

Jeremy Reaban's Summary:

Lots of assorted rules material for Dragonstar characters: Prestige Classes, feats, spells, spellware. So if you're a Dragonstar fan and love crunchy stuff, this book is for you. If not, then probably worth passing on.

Wraith Squadron

I'm a pretty big Star Wars fan, and I had never heard of the Wraith Squadron. After running a Google search, I found that it's in the expanded universe, which most Star Wars fans are not familiar with. I don't blame the developers of this book for not having read a particular line of Star Wars novels, and I don't think it will pose a problem with any of my players.

This reminds me of a recent book "Construct Mechanus", where the name Mechanus is used to describe two new varieties of construct, and the developers did not know that Mechanus is the name of a plane in the D&D Planescape setting (which is a bit more relevent and problematic).

You're a big star wars fan and you're not aware of the expanded universe material?

This is a pretty funny statement:
"it's in the expanded universe, which most Star Wars fans are not familiar with."

Speak for yourself. Apparently you're not as big a fan as you thought you were. They were on the NY Times Bestseller list.

You do know that they killed off Chewbacca right? Probably not, it's in a series of novels ok'd by the Flannel One himself, ya know...Lucas. Of course you did.

Actually the swordsman schools in Swashbuckling Adventures and its supplements were prestige classes, usually only five levels, but prestige classes nonetheless. This sounds completely different.

RPGs.

They simply don't make as much money as FF's other games. This latest "effort"
sounds like another example of their unwillingness to genuinely support this line.

It's hard to get excited about anything FF does when they may decide at any moment to jump on the next big seller and ignore the rest of their products.

I realize "that's business", but somehow other companies manage to avoid it. I wonder what FF is doing different.

I really, really like the original Star Wars trilogy (episodes IV-VI). I've watch them a lot of times each, and while I couldn't reply to a trivia question if my life depended on it ("what was the name of that robot with a red stripe on the head that was hiding in the background in scene 223 of A New Hope when...."), I know the characters, I know the plots, I know the quotes. I don't get tired of watching Obi-Wan and Vader fighting by the dock where the Millenium Falcon was held, or the AT-ATs stomping on the rebels on their way to destroy the generator at Hoth, or the speeder bike deadly race in the forest of Endor. I can recognize the puns and references in Kevin Smith's movies and all.

(I've also watched in the cinema Episodes I and II, which I didn't enjoy nearly as much, but that doesn't bother me. They are different movies, for different audiences.)

And, you know what? There's the fact that I haven't touched the expanded universe. I haven't read the novels or the comics. And I haven't played with the games (well, some of the oldies like X-Wing or Tie Fighter. And Rebel Assault as well, though my memories of that are fading quickly).

So, according to you, I'm not a big Star Wars fan.

Oh. Okay. I didn't know there was a certain amount of extra knowledge you have to have before earning the title. So I probably am a "small fan" or a "puny fan", or even a "fan as little as a jawa's circumcised penis", I dunno.

*shrugs*

Whatever. I can live with that; I'm not particularly interested in earning the "big fan" title. So I'll just avoid trivia contests, and in the meantime will keep watching the movies. Specially TESB.

"I love you."
"I know."

Awwww. The stuff dreams are made of. Mine anyway.

Funny, perhaps. But true. Most Star Wars fans are fans of the movies, not of EU. Many SW fans are NOT fond of the EU stuff, especially considering with every new movie that comes out, more EU stuff gets invalidated. Which gives EU stuff about as much validity as fanfic.

Seeings how DS is not a SW setting, complaining about the fact that a relatively obscure novel used the title "Wraith Squadron" is not too remarkable. There is another (non-SW) novel that used the term "Dragonstar", is anyone complaining about that? No. Only someone who is into the book would care, and the SF field is too vast to worry that someone will give something the same name as you (unless it's trademarked.)

-Sang, for whom Han shot first and Boba Fett is dead.

Indeed it is. They sound like the mechanic that was invented for the "Path of" series of books by FFG, and it is a thorooughly ill conceived mechanic. First off, there is no reason why the concepts they represent shouldn't be prestige classes. Second, by costing raw XP, they throw off the level mechanic, which is so central to the d20 system that it is hard to ignore. For example, if you have several steps in a school, you are arguably much more powerful than a character of the listed level. But you still gain XP as a character of that level, and your contribution to the party average level is pulled down despite that you are not really weakened.

FFG's representative heard these complaints and brushed these aside as some people weren't complaining about them (obviously people who wanted the power boost or didn't think too hard arout the implciations.) It's a shame to see it being carried forward and polluting more potentially good products.

-Sang, foe of bypassing levels.
