The first expansion to Bioware's Neverwinter Nights CRPG lives up to the hype better than the original. A solid, entertaining campaign is included along with several new features.

Since I wrote this review, I have had time to go back and replay a chunk of the official NWN campaign and I have changed my mind a bit. It's better than I remembered and I will probably actually finish it this time around, time permitting.

For years I watched others play crpgs and I gleefully stayed away from them. There was nothing in most of them other than near-endless combat and logic puzzles that made no game-sense (Fourth Wall, anyone?).
Then came Baldur's Gate II.
Here, finally, was a story I could sink my fangs into, great npc interaction, a replayable game, villains worth hating, and all the rest. No, it wasn't as spontaneous as pen & paper, but it was pretty damn good.
So I was really looking forward to NWN.
My conclusion?
Great engine for the game, lame story, pathetic npc interaction, and very little else to recommend it. SoU adds more bells 'n' whistles, but once again the story is dull, and while the npc interaction is better, it is still not the phenomenal.
I have looked at the downloadable adventures available at bioware (and affiliated sites), but none of them has turned my socks blue.
I think there is great potential with this game engine. Now will SOMEBODY write a decent story and get back to the BGII level of npc interaction?
Until then, all you have is unfulfilled potential.

CRPGs are definitely a different kind of game than RPGs. BG2 did have that extra something in terms of NPC interaction, I admit.
I would recommend the Adventure Path series... Sunless Citadel, Forge of Fury to you. It feels more like BG, for one thing. And the stories are the same as the pen and paper modules that are their namesakes. I found them more entertaining than the official campaigns.

One question of mine that I haven't seen answered (though I'll admit I haven't looked hard).
If you get SoU and install it are all the new features available in NWN. I started through NWN and got near the end of the 3rd chapter then Morrowind came out and I never bothered to finish NWN. I was thinking of maybe finishing it now but was wondring if the new features work in NWN or are the only limited to SoU.

I wish I knew C, I wish I could script, unfortunatly not knowing C greatly limits what can be done with the engine for me. I had a great idea for a CRPG plot that took into account some of the limitations of CRPG's, and I'd started making it under FRUA (Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures)--I think its a good idea for a story within a CRPG, but can't script *SIGHS*
I know your pain though, I want a story one with variable outcomes, if only I had the technical adeptness of the scripting language.
Maybe I can work it out in Morrowind (whose toolset is WAY WAY friendlier..)

By chance, does anyone know the location of player lists? Does such a thing exist? I'm still working through the single-player version, but I don't have access to people interested in participating in an online NWN campaign.
