[RPG]: Arms Law, reviewed by Brent Knorr (3/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/9/9479.phtml

Brent Knorr's Summary:

If you are looking for something to spice up combat in D&D, you might want to give Arms Law a try. It's almost essential if you want to play Rolemaster and don't own a previous version of Arms Law.

Converted from Phorums BB System

Good review. But I can hardly find it in my heart to fogive ICE for that big of a blunder. Given ICE's rocky history and such over the past years they should do a better job...

That is a REALLY boneheader typo on ICE's part. Sure errata is standard fare (even with ALL the desktop publishing available today), but that is a doozy..

I would have liked to have heard more about the conversion for other systems. I played RM for nearly 10 years, but have since moved on as most of the old crowd either does not play RM or not at all.

One problem I can forsee with using Arm's Law in a D20 setting is D&D healing is general. Rolemaster injuries are incredibly specific. The work around is just using the numeric data and not the flavor text. Which leads to anothe rproblem.

I have not skimmed through the latest and great RM stuff (since RMSS to be specific). But as I recall character death was a little different as PC's could go a fare more negative than their D20 counter parts. One of the annoying left over Gygaxisms... I would think a characters constitution would come in to play to reflect their resiliance...something like 10+Con or Con Mod would be better.

Cheers,
Wes

How does it compare to Ten Million?

I was considering ICE's "10 Million Ways to Die" which has ALL the critical charts, etc. but am now confused which book to get? I LOVE the criticals but need the conversion notes - so which is the book (or books) to get?

It kind of depends what type of campaign you are running. If it's a straight Fantasy Campaign, then Arms Law is the way to go. If you are going to have modern or futuristic weapons then you may want 10 Million Ways to Die. I don't recall what 10 Million Ways to Die has in the way of notes for use with other systems, once I'm back from vacation next week, I can post more information on that topic.

I try and post some more information on the conversions next week when I get back from vacation. I don't think there was much in the way of notes on how to handle healing specific injuries, but I could be mistaken.
