[Miniature]: Codex Eye of Terror, reviewed by Infernal Teddy (5/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/9/9501.phtml

The Allamistako's Summary:

Games Workshop's new Summer Campaign Codex offers four new Amry List variants for it's Warhammer 40,000 game. Are they worth it, and can Eye of Terror keep up with 2000's Codex: Armageddon?

Armageddon armies dying out?

Nice review!

However, I think you are wrong about at least one thing, the current status of the armies from Codex:Armageddon. I still see quite a lot of use from the Steel Legion Imperial Guard list (the Mechanised Infantry) and also the Ork Speed Freaks (Kult Of Speed) sees use over here.

So the only real disappearing army from C:A was the Salamanders.

Fluff

I've been out of the loop for a while--since rogue trader, actually--but--didn't the eye of terror used to be a place where warp storms would prevent Imperial transit? I seem to recall that everynow and then, the Imperium would show up, kick butt for a few minutes, then depart before they were eternally trapped. Is this covered in the current fluff or has it changed?

Personally, the idea of a region of perinnial outlaws, slave traders, rogue traders and their ilk--implying, almost, dare I say it, the vary elements of Chaos--always appealed to me. It would be a shame to lose that edge. It seems like with army lists that are dedicated to the Eye of Terror, is there no corner of the galaxy that the Imperium can't touch?

Of course I might just be me that's out of touch too. I haven't paid attention lately, so please point out refernces that I might have overlooked. I always liked the images of the trapped/heretic space marines in the original rogue trader book thugh. It sounds like they tried to expand on the ideas of trapped legions--did they go to far? I suppose the idea of slaver lists is long gone as well. Oh well.

You've been ~very~ out of touch, actually. :-)

When the Realm of Chaos books came out a few months after Rogue Trader, the Eye of Terror became a warp/realspace overlap in which was located a single star system, the sole planet of which was where the Traitor Legions had fled.

Since then, it's been rewritten as an 'Imperium of Chaos'. Although in a far more compact area of space, Imperial scholars suspect there could be as many Daemon Worlds within the Eye of Terror as there are Imperial worlds outside it. (The reason for this is that, whereas only a tiny percentage of normal planets are habitable, or populated by humans, almost every planet within the Eye has been transformed by its Daemonic patron into a hellish Bosch/Escher/Dante-style nightmare.

The Imperium ~can't~ touch the Eye of Terror, thanks to the hostile Chaos worshippers within it, Daemonic attacks, and the sheer mutating effect of flying through a mixture of matter and warp energy. They occasionally launch incursions or reconnaisance missions, but these are rare and incredibly costly.

These army lists represent the forces coming out of the Eye on Abaddon's Thirteenth Black Crusade - only the Lost and the Damned and the 13th Company (who aren't even part of the Imperium, but long lost Marines who may or may not be excommunicated for their corruption: using salvaged enemy equipment and the whole werewolf thing).

The backwater worlds idea that made up the original Rogue Trader Eye of Terror basically applies to a large number of Imperial worlds across the galaxy - it's actually a minority of worlds with a population above about a few million.

The Salamanders really didn't have that much going for them, unfortunately.

They're Space Marines, but they're slower.

And carrying more flamers.

And they're green.

Or you can be the Black Templars! Fanatical zealots! Big squads! Choppy hacky close combat! The Emperor's Champion! The Land Raider Crusader!

There just wasn't enough of a gimmick or organisational change to make the Salamanders list interesting.

Cadians

The best part about the Cadians is their ability to re-roll '1s' on to-hit rolls. Cadians train from youth to be sharpshooters and no Cadians can miss that bad. Of course, this is just a precursor to the new IG Codex, which is due out next. There will be a list of abilities like in the Chaos Codex and this will just be one of them. So, people will be able to mix and match (according to Pete Haines) two abilities from the list to create their own unique themed IG army. Cadians is just an example of what will be possible with the new 'dex. But for now, they are a refreshing change to Catachans.

However, this special ability is only available for troop types that have "shoot" 3 or less, and only if you pay 10pt. per squad...

As I hope I said at the top, I can only speak from personal and local experiance, and over here, you hardly ever see anthing from Armageddon anymore except for the Black Templars...

...Although I will be using Steel Legion minis for my Stormtroopers... *G*

It's odd that Kult of Speed hasn't continued in Germany, odd, considering the steaming hulk of cheese that it is. I would have thought it was still the best army in 40k, which is pretty amazing for a 3 year old GW supplement. The usual power-creep being what it is.
