http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/9/9615.phtml

Tim Gray's Summary:

This is a great idea for boosting a part of the RPG industry that’s still quite new yet will become ever more important, but it really needs to sharpen up its delivery.

I've been thinking about picking this up for awhile.

How much of the informtion contained can be used or directly translated to the Paper publishing of RPGs?

I was going to say, "not a lot" - but on a quick flip through, most of it can. A few pages are irrelevant - technical stuff about pdf preparation, promo for RPGNow - and there isn't anything about more standard distribution channels. If you re-read my chapter summaries you'll get an idea of what's there. If you have the spare cash it might be some use to you.

RPGNow is really as dominant as their book makes out.

*throws vegetables at head over parapet*

Heh. Thanks, John. Just to be clear, I wasn't really debating the fact, just the way it's sometimes handled a bit heavy-handedly in the book. Even a set of quotes would look a bit like blatant self-marketing... There's nothing wrong with that, but if it *looks* too much like it, it tends to trigger and adverse reaction.

I think a sort of panel discussion format would be the easiest way to manage this. People like yourself could give their (say) top three tips for newcomers, some of them would naturally be about RPGNow, and it's sold. This is a poor way to present a long chain of information, so most of the book needs to be edited into a unified voice, but it might have made an interesting early chapter.

2004 Update

It would only be fair to note that the book was updated in mid 2004 to correct many of the editing problems as well as update the graphs and data.

Plus now it's companion books are out.

It would only be accurate to note that the guide suffers from the same problems as before. See my review on the site:
http://www.rpgnow.com/product_reviews_info.php?products_id=1668&reviews_id=6401&

In particular, Monte Cook has still written a "Forward."
