[RPG]: Alpha Complexities, reviewed by The Horror (5/5)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/9/9622.phtml

Thalles de Mello's Summary:

No Paranoia adventure published before 1988 beats this one. I don't see how any published after 1988 could have done either.

My one bad point

And it's a small one:

The title is too generic. Man, I agree it's a very good adventure, but whenever I think about Paranoia adventures, I'm always wondering, "Alpha Complexities, oh yeah forgot about that one, what is in that again?"

The others are way more memorable.

True, but it fits with the aspect to give those playing the adventure as little info as possible as what is going to happen, much like most of the mission briefings in the adventures themselves.
"Clones in Space? Must be a Star Trek Wars parody?"

"Orcbusters? D&D send up."

"Alpha Complexeties? Well, uh, let's see, um, could be about, complications, I guess..."

This adventure also had art by the fellow who was second best Paranoia artist next to Jim Halloway, whose name escapes me, but I believe he did some comic book work as well, on DC's Hawk and Dove. Gotta love the pic with the Troubleshooters gloating over a minor victory, oblivious of the tri-gantic Mark IV rolling in from behind. Sadly, I never got to run this adventure, though I have run the "prequel" "Me and My Shadow, Mark IV" twice.

The art was done by Greg Guler. I'm unaware of any specific comic book work, though his style is very comic book-like.

Where to find these?

So, I know that these are all long long long out of print. Any suggestions on finding these old classics for a classic game.

Also, any good conversions of paranoia to a slightly smoother ruleset?

I've picked up all of my Paranoia stuff through a combination of ebay and from second hand bookshops online. Not that hard to find. Even picked up one of the novels and all of the comic books from ebay. Just keep your eyes open for good deals.

Don't know about rules conversions. Paranoia 2nd ed is perfect - the computer says so.

Well, you may be able to buy a new Edition soon. Read our interview with Paranoia co-author Greg Costikyan to find out more.
