"Role-playing, not roll-playing," hyuk h

Post originally by Scott Lynch at 2003-08-18 11:08:53
Converted from Phorums BB System

<b>It's a fantastic mechanic that encourages role-playing over roll-playing (What a concept, huh?).</b>

I know nothing about RoS, so I won't comment on the rest of the review, but... can we all please agree to terminate this pernicious, sneering, presumptuous phrase with extreme prejudice and <i>blast it into the cold depths of space,</i> never to be uttered again?

Perhaps the first person who ever said "role-playing, not roll-playing" was being witty. The eighty-three million subsequent uses of the phrase have not been quite so clever. In fact, if you listen carefully you can hear the Baby Jesus crying.

Cheers,

SL

Sounds like the game's not your style.

By that I mean, it seems like many of your complaints are not really a fault in the game; it's just that you prefer a different style of play.

For instance:

- very powerful sorcerers
- deadly combat; not "heroic" enough
- too many options for character nation
- not enough attention to game balance

I don't think you can actually say the *game* is bad as such because of these; it's just bad for you and your group. I mean, I actually *like* the deadliness of combat - and Spiritual Attributes can take a character into the "heroic" mode.

F'rexample, a TROS character with a 5 in conscience, fighting to defend innocents. That's 5 extra dice on *every roll*. Or a knight saving the king's child, with an Attribute for "service to the royal family" or "protect the royal family" or whatever.

Not that I think TROS is the best game ever (there are a number of things I don't like about it, magic system included), and in fact the designers' insistence in the book that it *is* the best game ever ticks me off, but that's life, no?

E.

...though I note you gave the game scores of 4, so perhaps you're not as down on the game as I thought from your review.

Er, I don't get it

If you hated the game so much, why give it 8 out of 10?

And as for shaking reality into Jake's realistic game, do you REALLY think you should be talking about how sorcerers start off godlike (or shouldn't in this case)? Do you know that realistically sorcerers start off weak? I don't. I've never met any to tell me. To cap it off, you use Luke Skywalker as an example! Um, I'd say he was cinematic, not realistic....

And as for 30 nations, does it make much difference? Would you have preferred 3? Exalted has just as many, if not more. So does the Forgotten Realms, and Hero Wars/HeroQuest, although they're only concentrating on 2.

I think you were overly hard in your review.

I quite like the game, and found that even though it's harsh, it CAN be played.

I find it very ironic...

That the reviewer followed up this sentence:

"Well, let me shake some reality into your "realistic" game here, Jake..."

With examples from SCIENCE FICTION MOVIES, and FICTIONAL TV SHOWS as how magic "really works".

*sigh*

In his defense, when he also put the "What a concept, huh?" comment, he was being sarcastic about it.
So his view on the subject was, basically, the same as yours.
I think you just didn't get it.

Maybe he didn't get it, but the "you can hear Baby Jesus crying" part was really funny.

SCIENCE FICTION MOVIES, and FICTIONAL TV SHOWS *gasp*

How dare he do that! Why didn't he compare it to how magic works in the real world???

It doesn't work there? Ok, unrealistic system.

Okay, how about "sorcery" and "realistic" don't belong in the same paragraph, let alone sentence?

(cf. "verisimilitude")
