[RPG]: Star Ace, reviewed by grubman (3/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/9/9638.phtml

grubman's Summary:

STAR ACE was a swashbuckling space opera science fiction RPG produced in the 80s. While the \"sophisticated\" gamers of the time thought of it as silly, STAR ACE has a fun setting and solid game system, that probably would be more appreciated these days. This Mega review covers the game and every supplement produced for it.

Great review

Just wanted to say I really enjoyed reading this review; took me back to the good old days of Timemaster, Chill etc.

I liked Star Ace, but funnily enough I also preferred Star Frontiers, a game that sadly didn't get as much support as it deserved.

Are you planning on doing any other 'retro' reviews?

Star Ace, TimeMaster, and Chill

These 3 all used the same system, right? I had a copy of TimeMaster at one time - the rules for time travel and Time Corps agents were pretty cool. The Demoreans metioned in the Aliens book are the same ones that were the main bad guys in TimeMaster, correct?

A great review. It's nice to see some of Pacesetter's games finally getting a fair shake. It's long overdue.

Sincerely,

Thanks, this one was a blast to write. It was also cool knowing that a lot of people aren't familiar with the game, and BAM! here they know everything there is to know.

I've already done a bunch (search under grubman), I'm actually starting to run out of "retro" games that I'm really pationate about that don't already have good reviews done by someone else.

Yes, all 3 games use basicly the same system (that's the original CHILL, not to be confused with the Mayfair version that has a slightly refined version of the system).

As far as the Demoreans, I don't actually know?? never having read Timemaster. Anyone who has both games know?

To bad they still aren't in business, since they are in my neck of the woods!

I hope Phil Reed comes along and gives us some insight to the new version of the game.

Preach it, brother!

I adored Star Ace. Next to the obligatory D&D and (not-so-obligatory) Top Secret/SI campaigns I ran in high school, Star Ace was the longest running game I ever ran.

Tons of fun, and I must confess that I tried to capture some of that fun in the work I did on Star Wars years later.

God, I miss this game.

Only Timemaster, and the CHILL adventures. Philip Reed purchased all rights and backstock of Star Ace from them. He wrote once that there wasn't a lot of it (backstock that is).
