[RPG]: Orpheus, reviewed by Alex deMorris (4/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/9/9653.phtml

Alex deMorris's Summary:

Orpheus is the latest Storytelling game from White Wolf. Some will call on its similarities to the late Wraith: the Oblivion game and not take it for what it is, a storytelling game about ghosts for ghosts through a human perspective. The first in a limited series, Orpheus has several things going for it, and while a part of the World of Darkness, has several things against it.

Thank you for taking your time...

My, that was quick! How long has Orpheus been out?

This was a comprehensive, by-the-numbers walkthrough of evrything that I want in a capsule review... and it got me hooked on the idea of getting hold of Orpheus ASAP.

Thanks!

One problem?

I have the same problem with this review as I do with the white wolf web page for Orpheus. I want to know more. I like WoD and understand it fairly well but neither this review or their page describes what the hell is going and what you can do... Wraith had some great ideas but was completely unplayable. Even after I read the short pdf fiction on their site I still don't have a feel for what it actually is! It was well written and intriguing but what does it tell me? Besides this one flaw your review was a shinning example of what one should look and read like.- TheCatofUlthar

Completely unplayable?

Try telling that to the people I know who've been playing Wraith for years.

Myself, I get a pretty good picture of what Orpheus is about (in general terms) by reading the Orpheus site and this review.

Connection to Wraith?

Does Orpheus actually explain the (metaplot) differences between wraiths and Orphean ghosts? I'm a Wraith fan, and was wondering how the two connected in the World of the Darkness.

I enjoyed the review, by the way.

The Review was good, just what i wanted to know, and now i will probably buy it.

After reading this review and the Opheus-page from WW, i think Orpheus has a feel of "X-files meets Delta Green meets Wraith meets Hunter" - which is, in my opinion, a great setting.

I was kinda getting X-files meets Weyland-Yutani meets Flatliners.
It's all good.

Wraith is only unplayable to those of extremely limited imaginations.

Basically, Orpheus ghosts and Wraith ghosts are the same thing, only there's no more travel to and from the Shadowlands anymore for either type because of the 6th great maelstrom and the destruction of the Shroud. New ghosts can't get to the Shadowlands and older ghosts (those who died before the maelstrom) can't reach the Skinlands unless they're immensely powerful or Spectres.

But no, Orpheus doesn't really explain the difference but does hint at it. I would imagine more explanation will be coming in Shadow Games.
