One Other Game...

For those who care: I know of one other Napoleonic RPG, "Privateers and Gentlemen," published by Fantasy Games Unlimited in the early 1980s. FGU came out with a few adventures for the game, and they may be worth tracking down.

Hallelujia

Character templates, which are omnipresent in most recent books, are not here. Instead they are replaced by the older-format "character types" ...

Based on this alone, I now intend to purchase the book to support this decision.

Holy freaking hallelujia.

And itīs a great game, including table-top rules for ship action. A fine product, I recently started a campagne.

Well, instead of adding zero to the discussion, take the time to write your own review and rate it a "5".

You might want to post about that in Trouble Tickets, then, and get someone to change it.

sources and inspiration

This is covered in the book but there are A LOT of sources/inspiration about this era around that would make for suitable RPG material with some creativity. I'd love run a Napoleonic era thing.

I single out novles by Patrick O'Brian (Aubrey and Maturin), Bernard Cornwell (Sharpe), and the granddad of them all, C. S. Forester (Horatio Hornblower). There are movie versions of all, of varying quality. Of course Master and Commander was a major theatrical release. The new Horatio Hornblowers with Ioan Gryfudd are just great, and a good way you could have a campaign. Availability in the USA is spotty for the Sharpe series with Sean Bean but they too are fun.

David Weber's Honor Harrington is space opera that wears its obvious Forester inspiration proudly.
