[RPG]: Fiend Folio, reviewed by James Landry (3/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/9/9684.phtml

James Landry's Summary:

A good monster book for those who want to use fiends as primary adversaries in a campaign, as well as those who focus on other planes or the fey.

The creature index

Even if the review was standard (which in the case of reviews is often a good thing) providing the list of monsters was really above and beyond the call of duty. While it dosent give away the book (as when people describe the system in a review) it certanly tells you exactly what you will be buying, or gives you a few reasons to look into it. So where you able to cut and paste that from somewhere or... you know...? If the second is the case... wow, that must of taken some work.

I put it together. The one in the book is substandard, and it really started to drive me up the wall while I was writing the review. So since I started doing it, I fugred other people might be interested in it, and there it is. I'm glad that you liked it.

Great reveiw, but one minor correction on the flame snake issue.

The heat entry for the flame snakes sas the touch does *fire* damage wihch varies by
subrace. Each subrace lists the amount of fire damage as part of its damage entry.

While I also applaud the effort that went into creating the index you included in your review, I think it would have been better to not include the full index, but instead have a link to another on-line location where it could be viewed (or downloaded).

I personally found it a trifle annoying to scroll past the lengthy index to reach the comments section. Perhaps its just me, but I don't think it necessary to subject your index to all who read the review, however complete and useful it may be.

I included the index directly in the review for several reasons.

1) It provides a list of all the monsters in the book, which I thought people would be interested in regardless of whether they wanted a full index. That is of enough utility that it should go in the main review

2) external links break, and I wanted the index to be available to everyone who finds the review.

3) Don't scroll down. Use Page Down on your keyboard and you can get to the end of the review and the comments section in under a second.

Considering I had to page down 23 times to get through the whole index, it didn't seem to take "under a second" to get to the comments. It didn't take that long, I'll grant you, but it was longer than the review itself.

Ultimately it isn't really a big deal, I just wasn't personally thrilled with its inclusion. I thought I would make my opinion known.

All the review is is text. Unless your computer is quite slow, you should be able to page through the index in under a second.

I don't think that is too much to ask, especially when the index provides a complete list of monsters in the book, something WOTC doesn't even do.
