[Board/Tactical Game]: Attack!, reviewed by ShannonA (4/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/9/9704.phtml

Shannon Appelcline's Summary:

An interesting aleternative to Axis & Allies that highlights replayability over simulation.

Thanks for the review.

I've seen this game (and the expansion) in my FLGS and have pondered whether I should buy them. I'm still undecided, but at least I now have a bit more information on the game.

Ditto; and a Question

Thanks for the great review! But before I go buy it I need to know one more thing:

What's the ideal number of players? And would 3 players be okay or would that cause some kind of problem?

Risk 2210

You compare it to Risk and Axis & Allies, but how does it compare to Risk 2210? Are the cards used similiarly, etc.?

I have a Question as well...

Good review, thanks! However, 2 things I wanted to know: First, why does removing enemy pieces in a specific order matter? If I roll 1 of each unit type, and you actually fielded 1 of each unit type, why wouldn't they all be hit simultaneously? What effect does removing infantry first and planes last have? (I hope it has some effect, because 2 plane markers on each die seems to make them highly vulnerable...)

Second, do you have or have you played the Attack Expansion? If so, what are your thoughts on the "Advanced Rules" and navel units? Are they a positive addition, or should the Expansion only be considered worth purchasing if you want the rest of the map?

I'd guess 4-6. Our playtest was 4 players and it had a good amount of interactivity. I don't foresee an immediate problem with 3, though you might wish to play with the optional rule where each player has to start with a region on each continent.

I think you roll to match your *own* troop types, not your enemies.

First, why does removing enemy pieces in a specific order matter?

It matters because you only have 4+ units in actual combat at a time and get to refill units after every barrage. If you're attacking with 4 units, for example, 1 of each type, then you're probably going to eliminate no more than 2 defenders before a refill occurs. If you were the defender in this scenario, this would be a very good reason to have 2 infantries on defense, to protect your tanks and planes, which are better attackers.

Second, do you have or have you played the Attack Expansion? If so, what are your thoughts on the "Advanced Rules" and navel units? Are they a positive addition, or should the Expansion only be considered worth purchasing if you want the rest of the map?

I have it, though I purposefully avoided reading the rules until I'd written this review.

It looks like the Expansion expands both the strategy and the complexity of the game. There's considerable more choice in actions.

In addition, there are some notable new rules, such as technology, political actions, government types, and naval units. I'd suspect that the expansion is highly worthwhile if you want a more strategic game.

I've got a playtest of it scheduled for tomorrow and so should be able to tell you more (via review) in a week or two.

Yeah, that's correct.

I've actually never played 2210, and so unfortunately can't offer much in the way of comparison there.

The best info I have on that game, is the review here:
