[RPG]: Dread: The First Book of Pandemonium, reviewed by Steve Darligton (4/3)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/9/9761.phtml

Steve Darligton's Summary:

It's like Tarantino filming Clive Barker, and one of the most visceral RPGs ever written - but it has a dark flaw beneath the surface... (NB: this is an R-rated review! Contains frequent profanity!)

Steve,

Thank you for reviewing Dread! I really appreciate it. I will be taking your feedback into consideration when I finally publish the revised version (in a year or two, perhaps sooner).

Cheers,
Rafael

I give thanks as well, but for a different reason.

Now I know to stay away from the game, as it is not at all to my tastes.

OTOH, your review was quite good for letting me know precisely why I would not like it -- a very well written review.

There's no need to get snippy. It was a well written review. If you don't have something nice to say...

I appreciate the review and will look further into the game. Thank you.

Rafael - my pleasure! Despite my misgivings, it was a joy to read and review!

Wombat - glad I could help!

Once again, I huried this review. I need to get an editor, or slow down.

Also, the phrase "monumentally stupid" is unfair and exaggerated.

The Gaming Fiction in Dread...

Is literally the best I've read, for any game. And that includes Storyteller and AFMBE (although it's neck and neck with AFMBE).

If you want to feel what a visceral horror setting can be, get the game and read the fiction. Else go to the website and download a few of the free supplements that each contain a solid chunk of storytime.

Great stuff. It's a brief, slashed novel with an RPG stapled to its ass. In a good way.

What he said. Unknown Armies is also pretty close, but Dread is better.

I don't think he was getting snippy. Well, maybe a bit.

But it is legitimate to say "That ain't my cup of tea." And to give thanks for a clear, concise review that makes it apparent.

Nice review. The game, however, is not to my taste.
