As I dug a little deeper, I found an incredibly good system with laugh-your-ass-off funny writing.

The Commercialization of Risus

Converted from Phorums BB System

I just wanted to post this note to let readers know that, by the end of 2003, Risus: The Anything RPG will no longer be freeware, but rather a shareware RPG with a 97 year* trial period. If, after 97 years, you decide not to pay the registration fee, you must delete Risus: The Anything RPG from your hard drive.

In 97 years I expect the technology to advance where I can simply click on something and anyone who hasn't registered will be distintegrated.

Those who do register will get a copy of the Risus Companion, currently in the final stages of completion ... A collection of articles on every aspect of Risus, culled from my decade-and-change of experience GMing it, and from several years of fan feedback. The Risus Companion also includes the invaluable art guide: How to Draw Stick Figures, the Risus Way.

Anyone who thinks I'm kidding doesn't know me.

===================
* The lifespan of Fatty Arbuckle. Obviously.

Actually, what he's not telling you is that this won't need to be a technological* advancement. He'll use his Extreme Cook Cliche (at some high number of dice) to kill you.

Check his sig (not the one up there).

-Marco
* The technological component for this is presently being developed by Orin Hatch--but currently it'll only target your computer. Ross is going straight for the stomach wound!

Does my purchase of the Official Cumberland Games CD give me a comercial registration for Risus? :-)

Any purchase of the Complete Library CD includes everything Cumberland offers for sale as of the date of purchase, so ... not yet! But as soon as Risus goes commercial, then yes, the Complete Library CD will include a Risus registration (and a copy of the Risus Companion) along with all the Sparks and other good stuff.

If you meant a _prior_ purchase, then no: a Cumberland Lifetime Subscription is a different (more expensive) beast from a Complete Library CD, and I only sell Lifetime Subs on special occasions.

On the other hand, if you're the Dave I think you are, you can just have anything for asking, numbnuts. See you at the game Thursday

Has anyone successfully used Risus to run serious games?

I've never tried to run it, but I thought the rules were nice and simple. I told my friend about it, and he said it sounded dangerously like diceless roleplaying. I told him to shut the heck up.

Check out some of the links on the Risus homepage. Quite a lot of people have done so, despite my persistent advice to avoid it, and many of them have documented it to astound a doubtful universe.

I've even done it myself, in a pinch, but "in a pinch" is pretty much the only time it's advisable.

Were it not for the issues pointed out in the review, it would be one of my first choices.
