http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/9/9788.phtml

Shannon Appelcline's Summary:

High Society! is a very quick auction style game by master designer Reiner Knizia. It serves well for play at the start or end of a gaming session.

Game is fun but almost identical to

Converted from Phorums BB System

This game is pretty fun, but the game is virtually identical to the game Raj (Winnging Moves, also 1995) which used plastic tiles for the items and numbered cards for the bids.

The biggest difference is that HS uses an Ivanhoe style bidding system while Raj is a single secret bid.

Ultimately I like Raj MUCH better because the strategy of "card counting" to know what your opponents have left, combined with a very "Are you the sort of person to put the poison in your own glass" type of thinking makes for some extremely fun play. It offers a great opportunity to trick your opponents and some real "in your face" moments when you've successfully guessed (through tells, patterns of play, and other poker-esque techniques) exactly what your opponent has played and manage to out bit by 1 or simply throw off a low bid card.

I've never played Raj, but seeing as you're comparing it to High Society, I'm likely to give it a try. Is it still in print?

Thanks for the recommendation!

Allan
