Not So Great

I picked it up as a huge Dragonlance fan, and as someone who doesn't really care for the Forgotten Realms, the DL book comes no where near the quality of the FR setting book.

This biggest problem was poor editting and uninteresting writing. For example, in the Kender racial description alone they told me three separate times that Kender are fearless, in three different paragraphs, each time phrased like it was new information. It was like three people wrote the description and someone did a file merge.

It's good enough for fans of the setting, but I don't think it will win anyone over. Don't expect a top notch book.

Why a Five?

Hi.

During the review, you pointed out a number of faults with the book - but at the end, you gave it 5/5.

If you weren't perfectly satisfied, why did you give it a perfect score?

I found the book to be a bit incomplete. No where, for example, does the book list stats for the Kender Hoopak. The primary reason I buy a book like this one is to have official, not homegrown rules, but if I run a DL campaign, and someone wants to run a kender with a hoopak, we have to houserule the stats now.
Pretty disappointing that a common racial weapon would be left out of a $40 book.

It's the rare book that's going to be perfect. Even the talented Exalted had it's share of typos and playtesting issues.

The book has several things going for it.

Price: Even at $40, it's cheap.

Art: Some classic artists and some new blood like Jason Engle give this a professinal feel.

Layout: Great style and feel.

Utility: Has lots of mechanical material that can be used in numerous game worlds.

Versitility: Can be used in the DL setting with different time periods with focus for Age of Mortals saved for another book.

I try not to let my own dislike of some of the Dragonlance elements effect how useful I think this book would be for someone else who either doesn't know the series at all, which makes this a perfect jump on book, or who actually enjoys the numerous flips WoTC does as they look for a final theme.

What about us d20-less heathens?

Is the book worth the money to someone who doesn't plan on using d20 to run a DL campaign? How much of the book is just world info?

Thanks for the help!

Happy Gaming, =)

I would say, no. The Age of Mortals has a much higher focus on role playing material. It seems to me that a part of this book was to update a lot of the classic stuff in the DL setting to the 3.5 rules and it has a ton of PrCs, Spells, Monsters, and a few core classes, magic items, and feats, not to mention two adventurers.

yeah I wondered that when I got the book as well. I got my hands on the DL DM's screen and it has the stats for the hoopak on there if I remember right. But I expected it to come with the book also.

Still a good book from what I have seen and read so far.
