Ouch on a couple of levels. This was one of the d20 spinoffs I was looking most forward too. I always really liked Gamma World and was hoping this incarnation would prove better than the last few.
Needless to say I am not going to rush out and buy, but will flip through it to see how bad it is...then likely put it back as I do not have a huge wad of dough buring a hole in my pocket right now.
If it is as bad as you say, it should be in the markdown bins at Attacktix soon enough.
A great, well crafted review of a product that might not have been good. Ouch that it wound up not being very good.

Thanks for the kind words.
I am also disappointed that, imho, the book wasn't very good. I really wanted to like this product, but I just couldn't get past what I saw as deal-breaking flaws. Hopefully the line will improve so those who do choose to stick with it will see some rewards.

It is a rough start to a line, if the first book isn't very good. But other lines have managed to succeed after a less than impressive start (Kingdoms of Kalamar d20 comes right to mind).
Gamma World D20 is a line I would liek to see succeed, just for sentimental value. It was the second rpg I ever played.
There are too many trolls who like to slam reviews without good reason or with less manners. I tend to give props where props are due. It builds good karma if nothing else.

Heh, see I think I'm just not picky enough to be a reviewer.
Alot of what he mentioned I would have to go back and actively look for in order to have it bother me (and I don't just mean typos... I mean some of what was considered "mistakes" or "wastes of space").
For example, other than being rather densely packed with info, I can't think of a single thing i didn't like about the Kingdoms of Kalamar d20 book... but alot of people tell me the art is horrible and the formats are hard to follow.

It seems to me that for a rating that low you need more flaws than are given here- the game may be poor, but the existence of some good parts makes it seem like this should be more a 2/2 (or even 1/2.)

Is something along the line of the reviewers-- it's a BIG book, and yet has less coverage of the settign then many smaller books do of their. Little info on technology, etc. I'm waiting for the Mutants and Machines sourcebook.
And that's my BHP-- I want information about the world. I'd also like artwork-- I was shocked that there was no art of the Death MAchine... I mean, those were the Godzilla's of Gamma world and they don't get a drawing?
IMHO, the author came up with a very, very, good explinatin for why sentient robots are still guarding ruined installations, rather than simply going off and doing their own thing.

Naturally, any review is simply the opinion of the reviewer. If you're having fun with the product and it meets your needs, then by all means go have fun!

I toyed with the idea of rating the book a 2, but the descriptor of Substance 1, i.e., "I wasted my money," was pretty much exactly how I felt. Also, I didn't feel that the few good parts were enough to bump up the score; none of the major mechanics presented are, imho, worth using. That's a pretty big chunk of the substance.
To me, the book is useless, so 1 is what I decided to rate it.
