[RPG]: Silhouette CORE Roleplaying Core Rules, reviewed by mxyzplk (2/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/9/9837.phtml

Ernest Mueller's Summary:

A generic system that is fun to play and has a good character generation system - but also has poor editing, bad vehicle design, and no weapons at all...

new edition.

From the sound of it, this is a review of the original softback printing of the SilCore rules, which does indeed have editing flaws and a distinct lack of examples.

However, it should be made clear that the new hardback printing (out this month) should have corrected these errors and added plenty of examples (the updates should be made available on the DP9 website soon).

Mechanical Design

How exactly is the Mechanical Design chapter so flawed, in your opinion? You don't make this remotely clear in the review (it's not a 'teaser' for anything, BTW - that IS the mechanical design rules). Citing examples of where you found problems would be much more informative, IMO.

Unfortunately, I have the 1st, softcover version, and my gamestore doesn't accept returns of previous editions in exchange for credit to the new version. And after shelling out $30 for the softcover, I can gaurantee you I won't pay another $40 for the "corrected" version. DP9 has been doing this with alarming regularity recently, and I don't want to encourage them by giving them any more of my money...

No Weapon/Armor/Equipment List???

This makes me want to take my brains and slam them against a wall again, and again, and again.. I really want to like this book when I get it and use it for my campaign - but without equipment and weapons.. How?

Well, there are two quick fixes:

1. You already own a DP9 game that has weapons and equipment that work perfectly.

2. You go to the DP9 website and download the weapons and equipment lists for free.

Fair enough. However, you can download all the addenda and errata from the DP9 website, hopefully soon.

Oh - they are available online for free? OK, much better - either the review didn't mention this or I overlooked it! Apologies.

Is this list included in the Deluxe Edition?

Canadian?

>Even being Canadian is no excuse for editing of this quality, and in my opinion Dream Pod 9 needs to take a hard look at their quality control before launching a new game line.

"Even being Canadian"? You know, it's not a handicap, it's just a country.

How many points is Canadian worth as a flaw?

There is indeed now a generic weapons list downloadable from the DP9 Web site (it wasn't there when I bought the book). Which is good - but doesn't really excuse the failing in the product itself. Releasing an incomplete product and saying "Oh well, we have the fixes on the Web site" is, IMHO , shoddy.
