Thanks for these boardgame reviews

Just wanted to say thanks for this series of reviews. They are excellently written and illustrated.

This game sounds fun. I saw it laid out at the Oakland Endgame get-together and it looked great. It's a shame I missed out on playing it.

Grid?

From your review it seems ships just hop from island to island. So is the grid on the board used for anything?

Nope. Pure aesthetics. (And, in fact, there was no grid on the previous German version.)

As I commented to my wife, the map is largely unnecessary. It serves as an organizer for the various markers primarily. Using cards or something to match up locations for players would have worked equally well.

(Though, I have no objection to the board. It's a beautiful and cohesive element in the game.)

I've been quite happy to write these as it's been giving me an excuse to play through large batches of board & card games and really think about how they work.

Of course I eventually need to do something even more useful, like write a book or design some board games of my own, but that can wait a bit.

I concur that your nice reviews and added pictures have been apprciated, in fact I have been sore tempted to get into board games a lot more based on your reviews.

I should show these reviews to my wife since she's a big board game player, and it might encourage her to stop doing useful things and play some more games.
