Reverse Engineer

Once again I see a review or post that mentions "reverse engineering" to work out a creature's stat adjustment.

Don't you think that subtracting 10 from an even-numbered stat and 11 from an odd-numbered stat is just a tad easier than is implied by reverse engineering?

No. Stat blocks are one thing. Getting the CR, ECL and other factors, as well as proper balance overall, are not a simple matter of stat subtraction.
