[RPG]: Tri-Stat dX Core System Role-Playing Game, reviewed by migo (2/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/9/9977.phtml

Robin Ashe's Summary:

The Tri-Stat system is the best system I have come across period. Generic or otherwise. It is both easy to use yet comprehensive and scales very easy to any type of campaign. The layout could use some work but considering it's a free download there's no reason not to get it.

Tri-stat = ridiculously unrealistic

Post originally by blah at 2003-12-26 14:36:18
Converted from Phorums BB System

In the real world (and in the fiction that games try to emulate) there are TONS of people who are strong and clumsy or nimble but not strong. Tri-stat starts out with the ridiculous assumption that those characters don't exist, thus making a fatal flaw at the foundation of the system.

I would suggest Tri-Stat makes the assumption those people are the exceptions, not the rule. Which in my experience is quite valid, or "realistic" as you put it.

I don't find this a fatal flaw at the foundation of the system. I believe it could be argued it is a fundamental strength at the foundation of the system.

Yep. The designer's note made the point that there wasn't a point to stop at splitting the stats up. They could split body into strength, dexterity and constitution, but then strength could be split into lifting strength and explosive power, dexterity could be split into fine twitch motion and agility, constitution could be split up into fitness and circulatory system and so on.

Or the review for that matter. I'm sure I mentioned taking a clumsy defect in there.

I Disagree

I disagree that Tri-Stat is the "best." It's more like "Hey, it's different! Try this system out and see if you prefer it over the D20 System!"

I like the Tri-Stat system because of it's difference. It's not the best, simply because it doesn't have the monster popularity of the D20 System. Every roleplayer usually does know how to play the d20 system, the Tri-Stat system is certainly different and handles rules in a different manner.

Besides, I'm excercising my Constitutional Right to disagree. Not trolling, just disagreeing.

I said it was the best that I had found so far. If you're going to disagree you should do it with what I actually wrote. I don't see popularity having any bearing on whether a system is good or not. It just has a bearing on whether a system is marketed well or not.

Saying, "The Tri-Stat system is the best system I have come across period" is meaningless. The "best" compared to what?
