[RPG]: The Basic System, reviewed by Norbert Franz (4/3)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/9/9989.phtml

Norbert Franz's Summary:

A fast and easy to use house system by Maine-based indie publisher DGBG. Not original, but solid. Parts of it read like a simplified, cleaned up version of Palladium or D&D. It's a bridge system portions of which can be combined with Fuzion almost seamlessly.

Clearly a lot of time and work has gone into this review, so thumbs up for that. However, after really trying, I couldn't bring myself to read it in its whole length. As there are no other postings here, I assume that this has been the case for a few people.

I am sorry, but I think such a long winded review of a game that's only 44 pages long, and is a free download, doesn't make much sense. Why read a long review, when you can download and browse the game in the same time?

Well I'll have to say it was thourough.
I do agree it was a bit wordy, and In truth I did the speed read over each of the parts. Niall you mention that since it is only a 44pg game so why the long winded review? Why not? It does put the game into perspective, and honestly in this world of free RPG's it's nice to know what we are in for before we waste the time to read a new RPG. My only Critisism on the Review is that the Author should have put a "Short and Sweet" paragraph to break down the review. I cannot comment on the system too much because I am a TBS developer and I would be sorta biased on the game system.

The problem is things like this:

---
In essence, you roll the familiar 3D6 for each of the Stats, and write down the number rolled, as well as a Main Stat Bonus (MSB) equal to the number of points you got above “10” in each. Any number you get lower than 10 on 3D6 will effectively give you a Main Stat Negative (MSN), and any number of 11 and higher will give you a Main Stat Bonus (MSB). As a consequence, if you have the average result of 10 you get exactly +0.
---

It's little more than a very long way of writing 'roll 3d6 and subtract ten'.

Well if you knew how to read you'd figure this one out. He's not saying roll 3d6 and subtract 10.
