[RPG]: Action! System Core Rules v.1.1, reviewed by Trentin C Bergeron (4/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/9/9995.phtml

Trentin C Bergeron's Summary:

<p>The A!S really establishes itself as a generic neutral shell system. It’s strength lies in it’s simplicity, point balanced structure, and potential for customization and development. You have straight forward and familiar system design, important inclusion of necessary information, and some basis for balance and logic across the

system. It is a fast and fun system, focusing on story and character development, and facilitating smooth game play.</p>

Un-Fuzion

Converted from Phorums BB System

Gold Rush published the (sadly out of print) Yusagi Yojimbo RPG, and currently publishes the Zorro RPG, both using the Instant Fuzion system from RTalsorian. Action!System sounds similar to the Fuzion Core rules. Could you highlight key differences between the two, besides the OGL? Thanks in advance

The Marketing of Action!

I know that this rules system has been in development for over a year now, and recently been released under the OGL, but Gold Rush Games will need a big marketing push for their system the way WotC did for the d20 System (via D&D).

You say that this is a great system for story and character development, so what better way to do that by launching a great Action!-based game product. I hope that Gold Rush Games have something already in development to serve as the "flagship" Action! System product.

Of course, the question now becomes, would either SENGOKU or GUNSLINGER serve a good flagship product, or should they consider a different approach?

Semi-Auto Rules on Page 16

Hi, Trentin,

"My first big beef - there are no rules for semi-automatic fire even though a rate-of-fire is included for firearms."

Er, what about the section entitled "Autofire" on page 16 of the PDF? It has sub-sections on bursts, stream-fire and spray fire.

How about San Angelo: City of Heroes?

Maybe it's just a genrebook, but SA already has a major following from its Champions days. As the system is free in PDF, they may be able to convince some to come over.

After reading this section further I guess these could work with semi-auto as well. Not sure if the ROF of 4 in a stream attack only suffering a penalty of -1 is balanced but it is there. I guess I should have been more specific – I wish that an example or mention of semi-auto fire was included demonstrating these rules in the context of auto fire.

Thanks for pointing that out!

Action! System Stuff

The new San Angelo 2.0 includes rules for the A!S. Gunslingers is an A!S product and I think both are going to be done well and provide some interest for the system. Sengoku is one of the best gaming supplements for Samurai/Feudal Japanese roleplaying you can find. I understand that the 2nd printing includes a conversion for the A!S and the next version will be an A!S product.

There are several products coming out for A!S from other developers, you can hit the A!S web site and browse from there. Luftwaffe 1942 looks like a lot of fun.

But I agree. The collective of A!S publishers will need to start getting products out there to generate interest and players for the system.

Almost. There is a free MechASsemble PDF that is a conversion from OGL material for designing Mecha of all kinds. You can hit the forums and search there for the link. The "official" release of that PDF should be soon, it is still in BETA.

GRG has SPACR coming out that can be used to design vehicles and they also have a Mecha OGL conversion coming out as well.

Battlefield press has rules for vehicles and aerial combat in the Luftwaffe 1946 game. Here is a link. It should be out very soon.

http://www.battlefieldpress.com/luftwaffe1946rpg.htm

So, they exist and are coming soon.

I have played both systems but I haven't played Fuzion in some time. I will grab one of my old games and take a gander and see what I can drum up for you. Give me a day or so. I want to respond technically as I have no intention of entering into a debate on "what system is better" kind of thing. :-)

Ciao for the moment,
