[RPG]: Sorcery 1: Shamutanti Hills, reviewed by Ciro Alessandro Sacco (3/3)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/10/10028.phtml

Ciro Alessandro Sacco's Summary:

A good adventure from a very good gamebooks series. Let's hope Myriador has sales good enough to complete the series in reasonable time. I enjoyed it.

Mapper & Downloads

I had problems downloading the extras (again). Luckily Myriador sent them to me by email. I hope this technical problem will be solved when Kharé is published.

Also a minor critisism on the downloadable maps. I would have prefered a non-keyed map to use as a PC map but this is hard when the map of the Shamutanti Hills contains spoiler text like 'Plague Village'.

Marc - impatiently waiting for the rest of the series

Spells

I own the entire Sorcery! series of books, having bought them, lost them, and then bought them again - sometimes at more trouble than they were worth.

One of my favorite things about the books is the unique spellcasting system.

Does the game manage to do that, or does it just tell you to use the D&D spells?

Also, how does it compare to the original Sorcery! series, which was a solo adventure? Are the encounters re-balanced and re-defined for party-based play? That Khare key was REALLY hard to get in the book.

It uses the D&D spells.

It does add the Luck attribute from the FF books. The authors claim that the book is as playable with one player as with a party of 4.

The key is given as a reward for finishing the scenario and not dodging the final encounter.

In all I had the impression the party has a little more freedom of movement than in the FF books. Also some fatal choices in FF here at least can be avoided with a saving throw.

Now if only Myriador would publish part II.

Cheers,
Marc

Shame about the spells, they really added a feel to the place. In fact it is the flavour that makes the Sorcery series - truly different creatures (redeyes, sightmasters, jib-jibs and flayers) not just your standard orcs and elves, exotic sounding names, a vibrant citystate etc.

What are the pictures/maps like? Copies from the gamebook or new. The gamebook had some wonderfully bizzare drawings (though fewer in the Shamutanti Hills I recall).

Actually, a pleasant thought - when Kharé comes out we might finally get a map of the place! Take that Blacksand fans!

My game books are somewhere up in the attic, but IIRC the old map was a lineart overview of the whole place from Analand to Mampang.

This version only shows the country from the Cantopani Gate to Kharé. It is a greyscale computer generated map with lots of mountain clusters but (since there is no color) no good indication of where the wooded areas are. This may be a problem for the Wilderness Encounter charts. But it is possible to download the maps from Myriadors site and I think that version will be in color.

Site maps are also cg.

The interior art is new; I dont remember the original art so I can't compare (without going up the attic). Some of the pictures are copied from Myriador's Warlock of Firetop Mountain, others are original for this suppplement.

Cheers,
Marc

Pictures and New Monsters

Seems like a very fair review--I've not seen this, but I've looked at a couple of Myriador's other titles in my FLGS and had pretty much the same impression that I get from your review.

I have two questions:

Does the book keep the original John Blanche artwork? I ask, noticing that the cover is different from the original book's.

Second, what new beasties are there? And do we have stats for Sightmasters (sp?)? Or even better, a PC template for this race?

Dorky questions, I know, but this kind of nostalgia product seems to bring them out in me .

Thanks in advance!

<b>I have two questions:

No. All new artwork by Janine Johnston, Mel Grant and Martin McKenna. Now that you mention the name Blanche I can even remember what the pictures were like. John Blanche had a real unique style.

<b>Second, what new beasties are there? And do we have stats for Sightmasters (sp?)? Or even better, a PC template for this race? </b>

- Elvins
- Minimite
- Two-tailed Serpent
- Skunkbear
- Titan Manticore
- Titan Cavetroll
- Titan Hilltroll
- Wood Golem

No racial templates. No sightmaster either, but I don't remember these from the original SH.

Cheers,
Marc

Thanks for the reply.

The Sightmasters, IIRC, were the watchmen on the wall that separated Analand (sp?) from the Badlands. Some renegades appear in Crown of the Kings too.

They looked quite elfin, but with very large eyes.

Nice to see that Jan(?) the Minimite made it into the book. Even if he was very annoying at the time!

Okay. Got them... In the boxed text:

"<i>...the Cantopani Gates. Guarded constantly by Sightmaster Warriors, chosen for their powers of telescopic vision..."</i>

But no physical description, picture or game stats. Maybe they will be statted in Crown of Kings.
