[Board/Tactical Game]: WarMachine Prime Rulebook, reviewed by Daron Patton (5/5)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/10/10094.phtml

Daron Patton's Summary:

Overall, the game succeeds in providing quality on every level. The models are very well done and for $100 you can get 2 starting forces (all metal miniatures by the way) plus the Prime rulebook. The rulebook is very professionally done with well thought out rules and exceptional game balance noted by most players. If you are a fan of skirmish games, this one is highly recommended.

For the unitiated, Page 5 of the Prime Rulebook has the Privateer guy's philosophy for WarMachine play. It's written tongue in cheek but it basically says that playing this game centers on taking risks and playing offensively.

It's not a game for little old lady-style, turtling (plodding along and making the other guy come to you, in other words). It's a neat little philosophy but the Privateer Press guys have also said that it's not an excuse to be obnoxious, rude or a poor sport.

Not only can you have two good starting forces and the Prime Rulebook for $100.00, but for another $100.00 you can flesh out one of those starting armies to include most of what you would need to play in most medium to large sized engagements.

Privateer Press has managed to do something that other miniature companies (read GW)either can't or won't due. Provide an elegant miniatures game with its own unique flavor for an inexpensive buy-in price and beautiful figures. PP could have easily fluffed out the Prime book to span over several books. PP's warjacks are sculpted just as well as the other company's yet they sell for half the price. These guys have done right by us because they are gamers first and marketers second.

Hope they have better luck than most publishers that were "gamers first, marketers second"...:/

Based on their event sizes at the cons they have attended and the number of people on their message boards, I would have to say that they are having much better luck, or is that knowledge and know-how? compared to other "gamers first, marketers second."

There's nothing inherently wrong about editorializing in a review. It's a subjective analysis of a product.

Yeah, I agree...Privateer Press has definitely taken off and the fact that they are continually selling out of their product and having difficulty meeting demand is proof of their success.

Matt Wilson and co. are definitely experienced in the business of gaming, but in all of their print from page 5 to their website they push playability over acquisition of figures. Better than that, all the rules are borken ;-)

I was saying that I was editorializing not the reviewer. I believe the reviewer gave an accurate and informed report of the book.
