[Computer Game]: Freelancer, reviewed by javelin98 (5/2)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/10/10108.phtml

javelin98's Summary:

Great graphics and interface, but a barren landscape as far as actual role-playing goes.

Spendid graphics, ugly designs...

While the game does have very beautiful graphics, it also has some of the ugliest ship and location designs I have EVER seen... The Bretonian ships and their vaguely "marine" shapes (more crab-octopus than elegant silver dolphins, needless to point out), the ridiculously over-the-top pseudo-gothic Bretonian inside areas, complete with gargoyles and monolithic cathedral-like areas, and the pseudo-egyptian Liberty ship designs, while well rendered, are genuinely dreadful...

To tell the truth, it was so bad I longed for the oh-so elegant lines of the original Colonial Vipers from Battlestar Galactica, and we all remember how clunky they looked. :P

Yeah, I was kind of hoping more for starships designs in line with Homeworld or Jovian Chronicles. Oh, well. The wierdest ones in Freelancer were definitely the Brettonians -- their fighters look like they have goldfish fins on the back end. So odd.

I completely disagree with the review. I had a great time with Freelancer. The story is indeed linear, but the voice acting and plot is very good. The ending was terribly disappointing, but it was all enough to keep me playing more and more just to try and finish the story.

Nothing that has been mentioned here ever bothered me about the game. What did bother me was how unbelievably short it was. My first time through I finished the story arc in about 20 hrs. My character was "Maxed Out" {having reached the level cap, level 36 IIRC} 10 hrs later from running artifacts and other contraband.

And the gameplay?

Yeah, so the graphics are nice, and yeah, so the story might not be up to much. But it's a GAME, so it might have been helpful if you'd talked about how enjoyable the gameplay was.

Not an RPG

Not pick nits, but Freelancer is a space action game, and was marketed as suck. It's not an RPG any more than Need For Speed Underground is.

Not that it's relevant to your point, but you can replace the ships, or include new ones. There's a thriving modder community for this game, including a couple of Babylon 5 makeovers.

And, a really good rendition of the Viper. :-)
