[RPG]: a/state, reviewed by Fredrik Hansson (3/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/10/10194.phtml

Fredrik Hansson's Summary:

A game that wins you over with the setting and the free material on the company website. What I want to know is, when's the next book coming out?

Not bad, but what about the Shifted?

Not a bad review at all. However, from what I've read so far, one of the most intriguing aspects of the setting is the presence of the alien entities known as the Shifted. What are your thoughts on them?

Speaking of Mieville...

How much trouble would it be to convert the game for a New Crobuzon game, complete with fleshcrafting and biothaumaturgical sciences? The technology is there, but how hard would it be to make a magic system and appropriate races?

I was curious about that omission as well. Also, the rather peculiar nature of The City's situation. It seems to be set in a barren wasteland, and although automated equipment can leave it, any people who try to leave simply vanish. The same happens if you travel too high above The City.

There's also the aspect that character advancement is driven through the inspiration of hope in the inhabitants of The City.

Thanks & Supplements

Thanks for doing a review of a/state. It's always a pleasure to get constructive feedback on our stuff.

As regards supplements, the first one ('The Lostfinders Guide To Mire End') is coming out in August, with our first really big supplement ('Avenues & Alleyways') due out at the tail end of this year.

Thanks again.

I forgot to put the constructive question so here it goes.

You gave a 3 for style to the game. Is this because of the typos? Does that mean that without them you would give a better mark to the book?

in addition...

Just picked this book up last night (after reading through the A/sate lite book). I concure excelently done, at first I was afraid it might be SLA v.2. But it certainly is not.

the setting is rich, and the writers have done a great job of trying to give you a taste of almost everything in The City and leave you feeling full but wanting more.

Your review was good, but I felt that a more in depth look would have been even better. Such as a loo at the character life path method coupled with a attribute and skill point distribution, looked very well done, and GMs and players can add all they want too it. I encourage people to visit their (Contested Ground Studios) website, and take a look at a/state lite for themselves.

On a last note, this is not technically a Future City, though it is somewhat post apocolyptic there is no indication that this is earth. I have my theories, but I supose that is for a different forum.

I don't see why you couldn't discuss your theories here. (Unless, of course, you want to save them for my review of a/state...

That's what I get for not spellchecking before I submit, I guess.
As for the three in style, I wasn't all too impressed by the artwork nor the layout for me to award more than a three. The typos was nothing that bothered me enought to warrant a shift in rating. I suppose I might have been spoiled by some of the rpg's out on the swedish market which are disgustingly good-looking – take a gander yourself at http://www.riotminds.com/ and http://www.mutant.nu/butik/?page=shop/flypage&product_id=28
