[RPG]: Gateway to Destiny, reviewed by Joel Benford (4/3)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/10/10227.phtml

Joel Benford's Summary:

A well put together high level summary of four sectors in a buffer zone between great powers. An excellent overview, could have more detail, some nitty-gritty faults that many will tolerate.

I sent an updated version of this review off to rpg.net, after discovering an error and getting some feedback. It doesn't seem to have made it, this is the original. If you want to read the "extended remix", it's here:

Good review, Joel. I was wondering what this was like, and based on what you've said here I think I'll pick up the hardcopy when it comes out.

The UWPs are always going to be a pain in the arse in Traveller, I generally come to expect that... at least it gives people something more to argue about or correct on the forums .

We really appreciate the review! I did want to make a note that there actually will be a slightly more detailed 'starting area' in the print version of the book called the Imperial Trade Cluster. This extra bonus section is an additional 12 pages (bringing the total page count to 256 pages) and gives a more detailed look at the politics and history of this cluster, plus detailed writeups of three of the more interesting worlds.

UWP

UWP: Isn't the problem here that the UWPs were created for most sectors years ago, these were Judges Guild sectors once, and a such all later publishers are stuck with the nonsense rather than tailoring them?

Almost -- the Judge's Guild material was decoanonized, and Gateway to Destiny has nothing to do with it. However, these sectors have been put back into canon since then in the Megatraveller Journal and Atlas of the Imperium. QLI had to follow those UWPs, lousy as they are.

The Judge's Guild Secotors were not brought back into canon. The Megatraveller Journal Vol.4 introduced a new Gateway Sector, with new UWPs and Star Maps. This issue, entitled 'Lord of Thunder' is marvelous, penned by W.H.Keith, one of the original Traveller Greats.

'Atlas of the Imperium' only gave Star Maps, so the UWP issue doesn't arise with it.

Judging from the review I think I'll be picking up a copy of 'Gateway to Destiny'

Eamon
