[RPG]: The Taverner's Trusty Tome, reviewed by NPC Jeremy (4/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/10/10229.phtml

Jeremy Reaban's Summary:

Just about everything you'd want to know about alcohol for the d20 system (though it can be adapted pretty easily for other game systems) and quite a bit of info on taverns, too. Burp!

Are there rules for choking on your own _and_ someone else's vomit? You know, you can't exactly dust for vomit.

Sorry.

64 pages...$16.95 expensive?

Hate to burst your bubble, but the going rate for 64-page books not-so-recently jumped to $19.95, even from larger publishers like White Wolf.

A 64-page print book of any quality might not be cheap enough to qualify as a "steal" or a "bargain," but it's less, not more, than the average 64-page RPG supplement.

Gah. I thought the going rate for 64 page books was still $15.

White Wolf is selling their exalted books for a lot cheaper than 19.95 for 64 pages. Blood and Salt is 128 and it's 19.99

Oh my GOD!

Remember that ten minute increment when RPG book prices were jumped to $30, then went ahead and leapt to $40?

Guess what!

They could still sell them for $30, easily. hell, I'd venture that they'd lose no cash for settling on selling for $25 like back in the day. I'm talking about 250 page books that detailed full games. 100 page supplements never left the $12.95 shelf. 16.95 for 64 pages is ludicrus. That's over a quarter per page (26.48 cents per page to be precise). That much for a SUPPLEMENT? I bought a 464 page RPG full setting book recently for $35.95. That's about 8 cents per page for a full game (actually, it's about 7.74 cents per page). That's not bad. But over triple that for a supplement is so ridiculous that I can't even manage to get my thoughts straight on the matter.

I don't think that it costs anywhere near a quarter per page to make a book, unless that book holds the secret of eternal youth, divine wisdom, or, perhaps, teaches you to be a Scanner.

I think I'll just use the same smoky-bar descriptions I've always used and make CON rolls for every 2 drinks to avoid stupor/vomit. And I won't charge you the nickel that this paragraph would cost you if it were in a supplement's pages.

They have? What 64 page products are White Wolf selling for $19.95? All the $20 products from White Wolf I've seen are 112 pages or more.

Personally, I don't understand why *anyone* would pay $17 for 64 pages about bars. Is this really a pressing need that people have?

I'm guessing that the actual useful content of this book (the alcohol rules and the rules on running a bar) could probably have been fit into a magazine article.
