[Board/Tactical Game]: Diceland: Ogre, reviewed by ShannonA (4/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/10/10231.phtml

Shannon Appelcline's Summary:

A 2-player Diceland game based on Steve Jackson's classic game of future combat. A terrific adaptation, but not the best of the Diceland series.

Knockin' Ogres

This is, of course, just one die: the Ogre. It's, first of all, huge and heavy. You generally can't move or roll it by throwing other dice at it, though you can sometimes spin it.

Amusingly enough, it *is* possible to knock it over, though, as anyone who was at the Origins 2003 tournament can attest to.

I picked up someone's Space army (forget what the name of it was, it was the Orange one) who had to leave early.

The tactics were:

1) Throw 1 or 2-point units on the table.
2) Shoot.
3) Die to the AP.

Pretty much trying to open up a blind spot, as mentioned, so the larger ships would come in. Unfortunately, due to a series of bad rolls, several ships in a row ended up facing the wrong direction, and couldn't get shots in. It took a while, but the Ogre eventually got to 49 points. I decided to just say, "Screw it.", grabbed my largest battlecruiser, and whipped it at the Ogre, hopefully knocking it over.

...It knocked over, onto it's "1" side. I rejoiced, but to my dismay, the battlecruiser was facing the wrong direction. I was almost ready to concede when I looked closer at the 'cruiser, and realized it had the "Call Fighter" ability.

So, I grabbed a Runt (the one-point fighter), tossed it onto the table, and fired.

Hee. Going from 0 points to 50 in one turn is always fun.

Impossible to beat the Ogre

I really liked this game a lot...until I realized that it's more or less impossible to beat the Ogre. This makes it 0 fun.
