[RPG]: OGL Cybernet, reviewed by Alex deMorris (4/3)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/10/10292.phtml

Alex deMorris's Summary:

OGL Cybernet presents a new take on the old cyberpunk genre. Using the open game license, this book takes the d20 system and ratchets it down to the operating table and replaces its fantasy soul with cybernetic impulses. Offering more than just an adaption of the rules, this book still offers less in setting to take to the gaming table.

Slick review

Nice formatting.

My $0.02:

Not that impressed with the character classes. Where are the medtechs and fixers to fix up people & gadgets? I think it's kinda weird to have celebs as prestige classes, although it might make sense in that only more experienced characters would be truly influential.

Cyberpunk had skill chips. You had to buy a node with slots, and then could fit like 3 of them. While this created instant fun, you of course could never improve your chipped skills even if you used them all the time.

Will definitely flip through the book. I like this company.

Shadowrun used Skill Chips too. In fact, I can't think of a Cyberpunk game that *didn't* have skill chips.

No setting

If I remember correctly Cybernet was more about a rule-set and letting the GM or other companies develop specific settings for it. So, no, it does not come with any default setting,it's not like it got left out, it just was never the focus of the book in the first place.
Much like the D&D player's book, not much for setting (yeah, yeah, Greyhawk is there but more for example than anything else).

Good review though!

Setting Forthcoming

Mongoose has licensed Kiln Publications, a new company to produce supplements for Cybernet OGL. The First, Cybernet 2087, will be a 128-page world book, followed by 3 more 68-page books. The setting will be pretty dark.

Apparently they are eyeing OGL Ancients as well, might see supplements for that game.

Oh cool, I've wanted a setting for this ever since I got the book, but I'm WAY too lazy to make my own.

Howdy,

Where's the beef?

*groan*

The format is awesome, but the content leaves something to be desired.

As a person that never really got into the who "cyberpunk" game scene I find myself left wondering what OGL Cybernet is all about. Don't get me wrong, that's a great synopsis, but some of us crave details.

How many chapters of information are there? How useful are they in relation to extant OGL game material? How about compatibility?

Are we to assume that this product is nothing more than a bit of cut-and-paste from the SRDs or has effort been put into the rules? I just don't come away with a full sense of knowing what this product is all about, on the mechanics end.

Otherwise not a bad review.

Kind Regards,

Kester Pelagius

Maybe they're deliberately NPCs, so that characters can't always rely on their own abilities to do everything, and so need to go on those jobs to get the money to fix their equipment or selves? (Same difference, sometimes.
