Re:

"if I decided I want to recover the top card from my discard pile on my next round, but I can't immediately play it, I'm likely to purposefully discard a card to an opponent's discard pile, if I can, to try and maintain my card's availability"

Just to clarify, I am under the impression that you have to discard to the discard pile of the player whose deck the card originally came from; is this not the case?

That's the case.

THe point being that, if I had an opponent's card in my hand, I'd choose to discard that rather than my own, to maintain my current top discard.

Manipulating the discard piles can be a large part of the game, particularly in a 2-player game.

Seeding cards into the discard piles that you can use later is a common strategy. We like to call them our "farm teams".

Sometimes the other player(s) are able to take advantage of this and use the cards, but that's part of the game. Do you hold onto everything in your hand, hoping for those 1 or 2 cards you need; or do you open up your possibilities, but maybe help someone else.
