I'd like to mention that it is possible to GM a game of GURPS without the Basic Set. The first time I GMed anything more complex than Hero Quest was setin the Universe of a computer game called Star Control. The only sources I had were GURPS Lite (http://www.sjgames.com/gurps/lite/) and some fan-made GURPS Star Control racial templates (http://hkn.eecs.berkeley.edu/~mcmartin/gsc/)

So, it's possible to play GURPS without buying anything. Possible, but not easy (I had to make up my own collection of weapons and armour, and they weren't very well balanced.)

That was three years ago. I currently have 20 sourcebooks, and 4 more on order. Steve Jackson is cunning, no doubt about that...

Yes, but imagine having never played an RPG in your life and trying to GM a game with GURPS Light. It's just simply not going to work. That's what I was talking about.
