[RPG]: Lone Wolf: The Roleplaying Game, reviewed by Marc Farrimond (5/5)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/10/10392.phtml

Marc Farrimond's Summary:

An excellent setting that breaks from the normal 'hack n slash' product mould and comes screaming from the shelf onto your games table!

....but this is a wee bit over the top. If you look into the comments on the previous review, you'll find that not every fan will go nuts over this product.

"Normal Hack and Slash Mode"?

Just as you don't often get movies, books or television series advocating the value of conformity, I'm hard-pressed to think of *any* recent role-playing game (other than parodies like Hackmaster or Munchkin D20, and semi-parodies like Rune) that *has* emphasized the hack-and-slash aspect of gaming. So it's not really the normal mode, anymore.

Chris Davies.

A Little More Detail, Please?

--------------------------------------------
Likewise with the combat chapter, all of this material has been covered many times before in the OGL books and if you have even a vague familiarity with them you will no doubt find it pointless for me to go into great depth of such familiar territory.
--------------------------------------------

Not really. Most OGL products have their own spin on this, and many other rules as well. How about a little discussion on how this particular set differs from regular d20? Defensive modifiers? Damage reduction? Armor? It would help.

Well in fact the Lone Wolf combat system is a striped out version of the d&d combat system with no attacks of opportunities, the rest is unchanged (no damage reduction or defensive modifiers like in Conan)and is directly taken from the players handbook.

The art of the original Lone Wolf series is unfortunatly not present in the book. This is a shame as the new ones are, well... not so good as it is said in the review

I kind of like hack and slash. Is world of darkness 2.0 actually going to be worth looking at? With decent rules and everything?
