[Board/Tactical Game]: Smugglers of the Galaxy, reviewed by Daron Patton (3/5)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/10/10395.phtml

Daron Patton's Summary:

Overall, Smugglers of the Galaxy is an excellent game. I congratulate Playus Maximus on coming up with a fun, playable game that captures the spirit of space smugglers we have come to love in movies, tv shows and video games like Privateer.

Thanks for your review!

Thanks much for your praise of our game Daron!

btw: The link to your article from the rpg.net homepage is busted so I haven't been able to get to it until seeing your link here.

As for the gameboard, our printer had informed us that many games are using lighter materials for boards, and pointed out Star Wars duels (some CCG's even use paper as a board, but we wouldn't do that). We knew we'd have a lot of cards (more than most board games, and higher quality with no true repeats) which add to the weight of the game and where the real umph lies. As evidenced by overwhelmingly positive convention player feedback, the material of the board didn't really impact tha actual fun or gameplay. So, when faced with a decision between board thickness and deck content/play-richness we chose the latter. But your points are well taken and we will always be keeping our options open - thanks very much for your review and your wonderful comments!

Suitable for Solo Play (no pun intended)?

Sounds like this could be GREAT for solo gaming. Are there any aspects of it (apart from the sheer fun of 'mano y mano' cutthroat play) that would prevent one from doing so?

Regards,
Corporate Dog

Mr. Strain, is Playus Maximus going to be at Origins? I was wondering if I could pick it up there...

Playing w/o a ship?

Great review.

How does one continue to play without a ship?
Do you buy a new one?
Does the escape pod have its own ship stats?

Yes you're provided with a new ship (via your space insurance company one presumes) but it's like the one you start the game with (i.e. minus any upgrades), so it's a setback. You also lose any special Equipment cards you have, and it's possible some Freind cards may be lost as well.

We're actually still working out the details of getting representation at Origins, but stay tuned to our website at www.playusmaximus.com for further info!

Yeah, as the game's author said, you can play it solo (love that pun by the way As he also said, they have some rules suggestions for playing SOTG by yourself.

Since I have gotten my one obligatory game out of my youngest daughter---the playest--, I'll likely have the joy of playing this game solo

My family won't play anything that doesn't have Monopoly, Parker Brothers or Milton Bradley printed on the box apparently.

It was well earned review. I understand about the gameboard but I'm an avowed cheapskate. Gotta have something to complain about since you got everything else right.

I'm just wondering what expansion(s) are in the works since we only have to use the last two digits of a sectors ID number
