Good review

Let me be the first to say thanks for the review. I have always wondered just what this game was about. The only thing you hear from everyone is it is diceless. Well, that really does not tell me anything.

Now, I know more. From your review, this is a really unique type of game in that it has a different approach to every facet of a roleplaying game (chargen, combat, etc.)

If GOO is putting out the book, then that will be good news. I know my store is unable to get the game book from any distributor at this time and I am not interested in buying over the 'net from Phage's web site.

The Answer is No

You ask if the new Amber edition will use d20. The answer is no. Guardian will most likely release a d20 version of the game, but there will still be an active, in print diceless version of the game for those who prefer that type of system.

If you surmise (and I agree having read the Guardian boards and what not) that a D20 version will likely come out, then the answer would be Yes. It will *use* D20, just like Silver Age Sentinals does, just like BESM does. Guardians has shown they have skill in dual statting while keeping flavor.

Using D20, as long as the original rules are presented as well, is a *very good thing* in my opinion. It's all Amber after all. Like the Trinityverse stuff white Wolf is putting out in D20, I am just glad to see the games back on shelves in any form, and the old supplements and what not becoming much more pertinent again.

Will it be solely D20? Of course not, I for one would like to see what they come up with for D20, having played and ran the game since it's inception (though I only have the first 3 Amberzines for some reason).

If D20 keeps the game alive, keeps the Ambercons going, and most importantly entices a new generation of players to look into a 30+ year old universe then I say hurrah!

Have a great day!

Timothy

The game really is built for a large group of players. The auctions and stat ladder works, and works well, if you have LOTS of people. 13 years ago I was in a game at GENCON that Erick Wujcik himself ran the end of. I say ran the end of, because it started with about 10 GM's running groups of about 6 people each through the Character generation, everyone getting together for Erick to do the stat auction with 50 people! And then broke back into the small groups for small group GMing until the end bit, which Erick then GM'd for about 50 people. It really was fantastic and something to remember. I cannot think of another game system that you could have pulled that off in.

I ran a few Amber games, and then ran a Highlander game using the Amber game. I would agree 100% with the review, with the note that the more immaganative your players are, the better the game goes. Several players just cannot get thier heads around the fact that as Amberites, they can do pretty much anything.

Well, I was aware of the "bi-system" approach considered by Guardians of Order... my final questions were merely rhetoric - you know, tantalize the reader and all that.

I hope they do it dual stat, or even tri (in separate books though)

The more people who come into it the better, and people (like me) who love the diceless system can still appreciate new players and new looks (especially since the original system would still be the core concept, and still published). Once a good RPer has tasted the possibilities of ADRPG, I have seen many who at least have a fondness for it.

I just like the idea of seeing new copies on shelves, or :gasps: a hardcover copy!!

That would truly rock, it would be a solid reason for me to buy it.

Have a great day!

Timothy

Hi, Wave,

I'd then have to ask, is it advertised as a group-capable system? Does its compatibility with group play get significant mention in the text? It seems rather unfortunate, when from Olivier's review, it appears to fall down (or at least stagger) with small groups, the default and to my knowledge most common form of RPGing.

I ask as, although I'd pretty much decided to wait until the Guardians of Order edition, I've toyed with the idea of buying the Amber book at times. I'm not much for big-group play, and Olivier's rview reinforces the idea of waiting for GoO's version in the hope it redresses the issues Olivier raises, and perhaps spend the money on an omnibus of Zelazny's Amber novels instead.

I've been running an Amber Diceless game for about a year with six players. It works very well for that number. I've also run Amber games for as few as four. For smaller groups I did away with the auction but kept the relative ranking system and it worked fine.

As far as NPCs go, I just determine whether they are better or worse than the various PCs at certain things and I assign their numbers accordingly, thus inserting them into the ranking system.
