[RPG]: Turjan's Tome of Beauty and Horror, reviewed by Ian Sturrock (4/5)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/10/10424.phtml

Ian Sturrock's Summary:

Essential supplement for anyone running Turjan-level games of The Dying Earth; may also be useful for non-TDE baroque fantasy or sword-and-sorcery games.

Thanks for the review - you've certainly grasped what we were trying to achieve with these rules. Turjan's Tome is supposed to reflect a different style of play altogether.

1. The cover image is of Turjan preparing to steal an amulet from Prince Kandive the Golden.

2. Art. The art you don't like is by Charles Reid - it's deliberately pulpy, almost cartoony. I like it, but at least one other reviewer shares your opinion. Maybe I should fire my art director.

3. A PDF of the second chapter (GM advice) can be downloaded from our website http://www.dyingearth.com/downloads/TTC2.pdf

We haven't had many examples of play from purchasers, and I will offer a reward to anyone willing to email one or describe one in a thread.

"Maybe I should fire my art director."

I haven't seen the art in question, but I am certainly hoping the above was with tongue firmly planted in cheek.

If the art editor is only fired he can regard himself as lucky. The last employee to fail has been kept chained to their desk in the editorial suite, their lifes' blood being used to thicken the inks used by our cover artists.
Company policy is that everyone can contribute and Simon is very big on Salvation through honest labour

The art director, that would be me. I still like the art, it's just two reputable reviewers so far don't share my taste.

I'd worry more about the general response of the fans.

A sample of two just isn't large enough to be of much use as an average cross-section.

Thank you for your concern. I won't be firing myself any time soon.

Seriously, I would like to get more feedback on the Tome both its contents and its appearance.

I purchased Turjan's Tome on a whim, and found it to be superior. I share the enthusiasm of the other RPG.net reviewers for it.

The art looks very good to me. I'm not particularly interested either way when it comes to RPG art, so don't interpret that statement as a rave review from a discerning critic.

Forgive me for interpreting your response in exactly this manner.

Discerning critic raves about Tome artwork:
'The art looks very good to me.'

Well, you can use the comment any way you like.

However, most educated customers will probably recognize that a sophisticated art critic would use a more intelligent phrase than 'The art looks very good to me'.

If you want something better, get out the company checkbook. (Just kidding!)
