[RPG]: Pokéthulhu Adventure Game, reviewed by migo (5/4)

http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/10/10432.phtml

Robin Ashe's Summary:

Pokéthulhu is a tongue in cheek RPG that parodies Call of Cthulhu and Pokémon. It should be amusing for Lovecraft fans, Pokémon fans don't seem to agree however. It's also available as a free download, so it's worth a download for a quick chuckle even if you don't plan on playing a game with it, if for nothing else, for the \"What is Roleplaying\" comic by John Kovalic.

Dodecahedrons

They're actually Shining Dodecahedrons in the book, yet another reference to Lovecraft. No, this isn't truly important. Just thought I'd bring it up.

Good review, btw. It's interesting to see it coming from an incomplete viewpoint, especially since I'm adequately familiar with all the source material. Now I have a better idea what coming into it from a different perspective is like.

Printings vs. Editions

There's also a mini-bestiary at the end. It contains 3 Thulhus which were contest submissions for Pokéthulhu, possibly after the first printing (I'm reviewing the second printing).

Just to clarify: all of the printings of the 2nd Edition (Dork Storm) include the contest winners. There were three printings of the 2nd Edition, but the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd printings are each identical in terms of game content.

The thulhu contest was held prior to the creation of the 2nd Edition, based on the original "yellow cover" edition sold only at Gen Con the year before (Squishy Brain Games).

Glad the game amused; thanks for reviewing it

Oh, and just to clarify why I'm clarifying: I don't want any potential customers of the Dork Storm edition to have to root through the game at the game shop to make sure their copy has all the stuff

Thanks for explaining that, I could figure it out due to context, but it was more of an impulse buy 'cause I figured I might be able to get my girlfriend to play it as she watched Pokémon. So I hadn't really followed it or looked it up. Anyway, as the end part of my review suggests that plan failed horribly but at least it was hella funny to read nonetheless.

Ahh, I didn't notice the significance. Which Lovecraft story should I look up next to read about the shining somethings? Please don't say "The Colour Out of Space"

SAN stat?

Are they Crazy?

Yep - seems they are.

I'm all for the idea - sounds fun and wacky, in a shoggothy kind of way.

BTW, what did Casablanca's Rick say as a farewell to the father of modern geometry?

'Here's looking at you, clid.'
